    Hi all,

It's time for me to change the car, I want to buy a VW Passat 08/09 or 2010, just by browsing quickly in different websites I realised that there are different options, 1.4TSI, 1.9TDI, probably a 1.6 and a 2L version, I do about 10k miles per year so I don't mind if it's petrol or diesel.

From the different versions available which one is the most reliable mechanically speaking, also does anybody know about a VW dealer in swords Mcallister, would recommend this dealer?

Thanks a lot for your replies in advance.

At that mileage you will get better value in buying the 1.4 TSi petrol imo as there is a hefty premium in buying the diesel models which would take you along time to claim back through mpg. While the 1.4 might sound underpowered but it is actually turbo charged with 122bhp which is more than the 1.6 FSi that it replaced, it is also well able to move a Passat around.

Regarding VW dealers, just be warned that they look for top dollar for their used cars.

I agree about the 1.4Tsi, I thought its underpowered but looking at the specs it seems to be not too bad at all, what would be a reasonable price to buy a 2008/2009 one with about 70/80k miles?

Probably some negotiation on this one depending on your haggling skills:

You read my mind, this is exactly the one that I've seen today, I'll go there on Monday to have a closer look at it and maybe drive it for a test.

I believe that buying this car from a dealer doesn't require bringing a mechanic to inspect the car - I can be wrong.

I can try to negotiate but if I will request finance to buy the car that will make my task difficult, I much prefer to negotiate when I can pay cash :) nonetheless I'll try.

Are you talking about dealer finance or arranging your own? If going for dealer finance then you should bargin harder on the purchase price as the dealer gets a commission from the finance company when they bring new business to them. Cash deal in motor trade terms means no trade in rather than the method of payment.

Indeed it's a dealer finance, Pay some cash and finance the remainder over a short period of time (2 years ideally), I won't trade in my car as I think that I can sell it for more money privately.

So for instance, if I am going to bargain for this car and I'll arrange some finance with the dealer, Ideally I should get the car for anything between 9.5k and 10k.

Nice Passat that one. Definitely best to sell your own car privately alright.

1.4tsk Passat isn't at all underpowered. Not fast but more than adequate.

Bring mechanic when it comes to buying at used dealer but not until u do deal warranty is likely to be from warranty co. not great ! Also bill griffin is quite abrupt and matter of fact but in business long time and does well

Fair play about the warranty, it's these small details that I need to know before comiting to buy a car.

Good point about bringing a mechanic to check the car - I was naive when I said no need to bring one.

To be fair it is fairly keenly priced compared to similar speced cars with around the same mileage so there may not be a huge amount of flexibility in the asking price. No harm in making them a sensible offer though, all they can do is say no.
