fairtrade?

I was eating my lunch there and my treat for the day was a bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk and noticed the little fairtrade symbol on it.

I've never really thought about fairtrade much when it comes to doing the weekly shop. I usually just buy what looks like the best value (for me obviously).

But looking at this little logo, I realised I didn't know much about how "fairtrade" works or whether it works at all and there appears to be a lot of debate as to whether it gives a better deal at all.

Some say it artificially inflates markets and excludes the very poorest of the poor farmers, while others say it leads the market prices to fairer prices overall and allows for development of entire communities, not just the individuals signed up with fairtrade.

What's the consensus? I don't know enough to make a call on this one but someone out there must know a bit about it...

I usually go for what's better value. Although with things like Cadburys chocolate I usually presume that the higher price is because of the better quality, not the fact they're paying the farmers more. Maybe it just means that fair trade companies make a smaller profit?
