Got quoted similar money from Frank Keane BMW. Sounds crazy alright.

But I was covered by warranty so got it for free from them.

How old is the 5 series? If its an E39 is it a 2 is 3 button key?

If it's the sealed diamond key a quick search online will give you a guide on how to open and replace the batteries.

I done mine on an E46

You can DIY the replacement battery, or there are companies thatll do it for you for like 20/30 quid.

Apologies, I read the OP wrong, thought I saw e39 mentioned...haven't a breeze about e60 keys. A quick google would answer it for you all the same...

    any names for that?

e60 (e39 like key) i have battery = going pretty soon. Dont fancy paying 250 for a new one, or 100 for autokey to refurbish, as that one wont be used as often (will be the wife's).

    thanks

i might think into doing it myself, however im not sure if soldering is involved. ill have a look at youtube.

at 20/30 quid i wouldnt mind if a company did it.

Have heard of people sending keys off to places like this:

    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Repair-Service-for-Faulty-BMW-E38-E39-E46-E53-E61-E90-Remote-Transponder-Key-Fob-/180722879814?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item2a13ec4d46#ht_2292wt_768

Read about them on BMW specific forums, and saw numerous happy customers.

Don't know anything about that specific seller, but it's something along those lines. That's if you don't fancy a DIY. My keys haven't gone just yet, but my car is 12 years old...probably not long now!
