Rules of the Road Question...

    Hi All

I'm going to work through George's Quay-City Quay-Moss Street junction everyday and I'm experiencing a lot of "problems" there. People are cutting in with no indicators etc. I'm not sure if I'm right or it is me that's doing something wrong there.

Please have a look at the picture attached. Which car (green line or red line) has the right to go first ? Is it the red one because it seems like it is going straight or should the green one indicate lane change and yield to red, or maybe other options?

Please indicate if you're RSA instructor or someone in this field.

    Cheers

3 lanes into 4, I'd say its not black and white.

I'd probably go with the green line however.

This is a difficult call and impossible to figure who was ahead at the merger point or to figure out did someone change their speed or direction to get ahead.

Its likely that the car to the right (green) will have the "Right of Way" but in the case of an accident the determination will be 50/50. There is a legal term on it that I can't remember but basically common sence should prevail.

On appeal and having reviewed the footage I'm leaning more with the green as the red car failed to "keep left" a fundamental principle of the rules of the road.

i know the junction, I think it's 3 into 3, the left lane splits in two about a third of the way onto the bridge (clearer here: http://tinyurl.com/cojmumq) so green should stay in lane second from the right, red stays in left lane and has the option of either of the left two lanes when they split, green would need to indicate if coming into the lane you've indicated but that junction/area is a bit of a mess and you rarely see indicaion there.

They've recently put a bus lane right up to the lights where the bus and truck are to the left in the picture, so if the bus/truck wants to get into the right lane on the bridge and the van (to right of the truck) wants to get into the left they have to cross paths  bus lane should have ended a few meters befor the lights to prevent this but they prob didn't think about that

I don't think the green lane has any rights of way.

The car in the red lane is following his lane.

If the car in the green lane intends on turning left he should be in the red lane.

The green lane is to carry straight on or turn right to go up the quays.

The lane to the right of the green lane is only for turning tight and carrying on up the quays. (obviously all cars crossing the bridge.)

That's how I'd read it anyway.

That's my thinking as well, I'm the "right line" car every morning. I'm going straight following my lane and leaving very left one empty and I get pushed away by other cars (red line).

It does look like I'm doing it right there but:

Very confusing. Looks like the best option is to stick to the far left just to be on the safe side because if something happens there it will be a roulette who's fault it was...

yeah prob safest to stay left then move back into the other lane once you are on city/john rogersons quay

Rules of the road are not black and white, when it comes to applying them to non standard junctions. This junction by its very nature is confusing. Only with 2 aerial photographs is it easy to see how to approach this. Otherwise it could leave even the most experienced drivers confused.
