Ballymagarvey has had mixed reviews on these forums. Mount Juliet is supposed to be nice.
We had ours at Mount Falcon, beautiful location and great food.

Thanks - is Mount Falcon in Mayo?

Fota island resort depends on the size of the wedding,

small weddings are in the clubhouse and its nice but the bar/reception room/arrival hall are three seperate areas so its best to go check it out,

bigger weddings are in the main hotel and its is beautiful, it also has a good set up i was at a wedding there before Christmas and i loved it.

i don't know what the staff are like to work with, but as a guest they were brilliant.

Am planning on about 120 guests, have heard good reports about Fota so will go and have a look.

    Thanks

Mount Juliet, you will lose half your guests to the bar as the function room (they may have others but the one we were at) was too small and bar too limited.
Boyne Hill, function room is basically a hotel bar and is way too small if you don't want people spread everywhere. But staff are lovely and definitely would be good value for money. (No corkage fee is a massive plus)
Lyrath is meant to be fab but haven't been

We viewed the Lyrath and it was very nice, but expensive. The hotel is also in receivership and the UK company that run them now are known for reducing costs by going with cheaper suppliers for everything. Now I have had no experience with a wedding there myself so can't comment on the quality. But we're planning a wedding from abroad so didn't want to take any big risks.

But a friend of mine did get married the day we were viewing the hotel and from what I heard they had a great day.

I will say that Dervla, the wedding coordinator, is very nice and if you're at all interested in the Lyrath give her a call and go view it. It is a beautiful hotel.

Thank you - I am finding a lot of conflicting views on this hotel I have to say. Il go and view and get a feel for it myself - cheers for the feedback :-)

Ah I wouldn't say that, I've kept an eye on BMV as I'm getting married later this year! Feedback from friends and family who have attended weddings there have been overwhelmingly positive and my experience with them so far has been really great. I have no worries or reservations about it at all, and the service providers I've been speaking to have good things to say about it to.

I would be slightly wary of Fota (just posted this in a different thread)... Was at at wedding there recently and although the place looked great, the wedding from the night before had decided to stay on an extra night and had taken over the residents' bar by the time we got there. There was also a major feck up by the hotel that I don't want to go into, but that basically caused great upset and stress for the couple on their wedding night and gave their wedding night a horrible 'conveyor belt wedding' feel with a very expensive price tage.

Thanks, it's getting mixed reviews so good to hear a positive one. Did you attend a wedding there?

For your numbers and buget permitting Ballymagarvey all the way. I havent been to Boyne hill but the others would be very hotelly (iykwim) and very big for the amount of guests you have, particularly Lyrath.

Have you looked at Clonabreany? Similar size to Ballymagarvey with similar setup

Tankardstown house is another lovely venue within driving distance of both that's worth checking out too.

Clonabreany's menu is very scabby for the price though and their accommodation is very higgildy piggely. Lots of sofa beds and double beds in same room as twin beds. Would be fine if majority of guests are families but we'd have mainly couples and couldn't be asking couples to share bedrooms.

Was in Ballymacgarvey last week for a wedding, the place is amazing in my opinion.

Have been to Lyrath also for another, didn't like it as much

    Update on Venue's;

Went ballymargarvey for the open evening earlier, and it is a beautiful and unique setting. However it just wasn't for us. Too many rooms in the reception area, just felt upon arrival guests would be scattered everywhere. Some of the staff were very vague upon answering our queries. The wedding co-ordinator was all over the place and we had to tell him our names 3 times as he was 'hopeless with names' and wasn't able to tell us anything about the packages till he found the brochure to read it out line by line. I certainly wouldn't be putting my trust in him to organize our day! Plus I didn't like the fact that if you are having a Saturday wedding there are only 2 packages available to you, one at €140 or €108. And both non negotiable.

It is a lovely venue and exclusive but just didn't make any kind of a connection with me. My gut feeling was that it was lacking in something, maybe it's the personal touch.

    The search goes on .......

Me too and thought the place itself and food was fantastic. Wonder if it was the same one;)
