What would you do in my circumstances....

05 Opel Astra, close to 300K km on the clock (really long commute), Petrol, burns a drop of oil (topup weekly). Mechanic was previously discussing the possibility of putting in a new engine as the bodywork etc is immaculate

However... I did €1500 worth of damage when I ditched it in the snow/ice last week.

    3rd party insurance only...

Would you sell for scrap or fix...

    Thanks

Well ya got your monies worth. Depends on if you can afford to change or not. What is the body like? How much to change? What possible problems will a new engine bring over possible problems over a newer car?

I certainly did get my monies worth, it never gave me a minutes trouble to be fair. The body was excellent before I ended up in a drain but I think its some cosmetic and a fair bit of mechanical damage.

I'm leaning towards an upgrade (depending on finance etc) but I just wanted to see what you folks think?

Considering you'd only fetch €3500-4000 for it prior to the accident, IMO it's hardly worth putting €1500 into it all things considered. I'd be happy about not wasting a chunk of money putting a new engine into before it though. Bullet well dodged.

Perfect time to change to a diesel with that sort of running about if you ask me.

Doesnt quite answer your question of what to do with the Astra. Would it anyway appeal to someone as a damaged repairable if put up on donedeal? Then use that money, plus the €1500 you didnt spend on repairing it, then either bangernomics diesel shop, or if other finances are available spend a bit more.

An 05 petrol Astra with 300km? Not a chance in hell you'd get that much.

Good point... Hyundai dealership offered €3000 against a new i30 late last year.

It isn't drive-able in its current state and is sitting in my mechanics yard. He is a family friend so no great pressure to fix, scrap or sell etc. I asked about selling for scrap and he doesn't recon I will get much seen as the engine and gearbox have seen 300k km of use.

That means (for example) €1500 discount and €1500 for the Car. €2000 discount and €1000 for the car etc etc

Personally I would break it for parts myself and sell the shell as scrap. Buy a cheap bangernomics runaround in the mean time and save up some money to buy a nice car.

300k on a 8 year old petrol car, its worthless mate, get rid of it. If Hyundai offered you 3k for it, it was probably because they had a 3k discount to play with. time to upgrade, you'll save money in the long run with cheaper fuel, servicing costs.

Which parts do you think would make you most money back, the clapped out engine or the damaged body panels? :pac:

Only a blind person would buy a car with 300k on the clock.

    ...

Sell it cheap enough and they will. Pretty silly statement tbh.
