    Hi guys

I have been having a lot of success searching for archaeological sites using google earth and I wan't to get a bit more thorough with how I search as I do it in a very haphazard way, just scrolling around.

Along with a group of friends, I am looking to do survey of an area using google earth, breaking it down into small grids that will allow us to ensure each area has been thoroughly searched before moving on.

I would have thought software or GIS to enable this would be readily available but so far the best solution I have found is to add utm grid lines into google earth using a file from this site

    http://www.gelib.com/worldwide-utm-grid.htm

It's a clunky solution at best and makes the search process and the cataloging of which grids have been searched very awkward.

Is there any software or standard protocol for how to conduct a thorough aerial search of an area?

    All the best

Used the "My Maps" functionality in bing maps as a cataloging tool myself a while back, to record a "somewhat" systemic survey of a local mountain range, found it very easy to use.. It includes features for drawing lines/squares and the capacity to include images/text with markers and lines, so a bit of a one stop shop in that respect.. Very easy to share and collaborate on too..

Not something I do myself OP, but have you tried thinking about it from the opposite direction? By which I mean, instead of incorporating UTM (ITM actually ;)) into GE, why not incorporate GE in a GIS. I'm almost sure you can do this with relative ease in QGIS which is free (http://www.qgis.org/). That, along with the myriad of tools that come with that software, might give you better control over your survey.

I repeat though, this is not something I do, or even have done before, so I'm not sure if its any use to you at all but I thought I would throw the idea out just in case.
