Claiming tax for child??

Myself and my partner have a 1 year old child. We are not living together yet and both are working. Neither of us have claimed for the child yet. Im wondering can we both claim as not living together, even though the child has the fathers name?
And if not who would be better off by claiming for child?
And also the child is under my health insurance so would I have to have the child on my claim to get medical expenses?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

What do you mean by "claiming tax"? If you mean Tax Credits, they were abolished 20yrs ago. If you mean Child Benefit, it is usually claimed by the mother.

Yes it was credits I meant sorry. I was looking at the website and noticed the credits were the same for single and one parent but the girl in the tax office gave me the form to claim! So I thought it was something else. So you cannot claim credits for a child?? Can I claim back for my childs medical expenses do you know, please?

Both parents can claim the one parent tax credit once you are not living together, (as soon as you move in together you need to let the tax office know) Just complete an OP1 form and send it to your local tax office.
Either parent can claim health expenses tax relief for the child.

Tax credits were introduced only about 13 years ago, before that it was tax free allowances.

Thank you for that. But Child Allowances were discontinued from the TFA system for years before that. And the same applies to the Tax Credit system.

I believe the op is referring to the One Parent family tax credit. Link below explains further.

Yes but the OP is talking about the one parent family tax credit, (which really is an extra tax credit due for having a child when not married or living with a partner) and I know from working in taxation that a lot of people think of this credit as claiming for the child.
It wasn't really helpful to the op by saying that child tax credits were abolished 20 years ago when she can claim this credit.

You seem to be one of those people who speaks with great authority, and patronisingly too, on topics that you don't actually know anything about... If OP was given a form to fill in by the tax office it was surely the OP1, which is referred to in the document linked below.

You can both claim the one parent tax credit up to the time that you move in together. Its 1650 euro each so it well worth claiming. Don't forget to keep any medical bills for the new baby as well as one of you can claim these as well. Congrats on the baby by the way (even if it one year it still a new baby). Mie as 6 and 8 and I still think they babies lol
