Advice sought on private communal drains

    Hi,
Does anybody know if there is any legal status, common law or other, dealing with responsibilities concerning private communal drains. If so where is the best place to start, any information would be appreciated. Looked online but can only find info dealing with local authority housing not privately owned houses. I am interested in the responsibilities of the owners of the houses that have use of the communal drains.
    Kind regards,
    Rich.

Try contact environmental health if you have an issue? They deal with drain issues, although if it's a number of houses on a line each owner will have to contribute to the cost of repairs, flushing etc. they won't do it for you, but could advise on your rights (especially in circumstances where the person at the end of the line with the problem is afraid they are liable for the whole thing as often happens)

Hi Sala; many thanks for your reply. I was in contact with Environmental Health and they advised the issues they deal with concern food hygiene, tobacco and rodent control. They did however advise to contact local authority for information on what legislative basis the shared obligation arises. Just to tweak your brain a little more....

can you advise where you may have gleamed this information?
    Many thanks again,
    Rich.
