Car broke down today it was driving fine when parked up outside, came back out 10mins later and started it up put it into reverse and noticed it was very heavy, pulled over and there was a big puddle of fluid and a trail to where i parked to check it. Knowing very little about cars and not wanting to take a chance we called garage who sent a tow truck. The guy that came said steering was very heavy and it was likely to be the pump or a pipe

Is he right and if so what sort of money are we looking at for repairs? Its a 06 Peugeot 206 if that helps?

Is the fluid water, oil or fuel?

Hard to tell it didn't smell like fuel, i wondered about oil as it made a lovely rainbow but looking under the car after it'd stopped for a couple of minutes there appeared to be a reddish brown patch.

Am useless so really do rely on garages to be honest and after being stung last time i took a car in to a garage i thought i'd get others opinions as well.

That's most probably power steering fluid alright.

Misread the OP, thought it was hard to get into reverse. Sounds clear cut power steering leak, a check on the reservoir should confirm this

Garage have called and said its a pipe and its going to cost €250 for the pipe and €80pr hour labour and its a couple of hours work at least. Does this sound about right?

Ask what pipe specificaly, or better yet drop over and ask to be shown which pipe and where the labour will be.

If its legit they'll have no problem with this.
