'Reasonable possibility' of Irish troops being sent to Mali - Shatter

" It is a reasonable possibility that Irish soldiers will be sent to Mali as part of an EU training team, according to Minister for Justice Alan Shatter.
Mr Shatter said Ireland is anxious to play a full role in peace missions and conflict resolution and the issue would be addressed in the coming weeks. "

I'd imagine it would be under French command ?

french command - I think that's a certainty. Should be a good mission for the Defence Forces.

According to the "Irish Times", 8 Irish soldiers are going to Mali. Whether officers or not it doesn't say . . .

Minister for Defence Alan Shatter has announced the first joint deployment of British and Irish defence forces saying it was part of the “normalisation” of relations between the two countries.

The UK will lead the joint deployment of eight Irish and 18 British defence force members, under the First Royal Irish Regiment, as part of an EU training mission in Mali, Mr Shatter announced today. The decision followed a two-day EU defence ministers’ meeting.

The joint deployment will be part of an overall European Union military training mission (EUTM). It will include armed military training as well as human rights issues and the protection of civilians.

I know that, I'm saying that there's not 8 Officers going.

Fair enough, just saying what I was told.

You were told wrong though dude.

I know for a fact what the composition is but wont post until the deployment has been confirmed. It's a sensitive issue behind the scenes at the mo.

Apparently they will be attached to the Royal Irish Regiment.

"Ireland’s Defence Minister Alan Shatter confirmed eight Irish soldiers and 18 from the UK will travel to the troubled African country with the Royal Irish Regiment. The joint deployment will be led by the British and will be part of an overall European Union military training mission (EUTM)".

    [MOD]
    WARNING ISSUED FOR TROLLING:
you have now posted 3 seperate comments about your personal opinion of ALL officers in the DF.

it neither contributes to this topic nor do I believe it is true of all officers in the DF.

You say politics is involved this shows you total disregard and lack of understanding of the defence forces whether you are/were or not a member.

If you were then at the very least you should know that the Defence Forces are a non political entity by their very nature and charter. Suggesting so drags the entire organisation and all of those serving therein into distrepute.

Maybe you should begin to contribute topics for debate and discussion and not sweeping troll like statements. for example: if you have a problem and want to discuss the training and qualifications of Officers in the defence forces in comparison with those of other militaries then by all means create a new thread but do not throw out all encompassing crap like this without fact to back it up and reasons for the comment - you sound like you have a personal gripe in this one. it is a useless addition to the discussion.

Ive a mind to ban you but this is the first time you've come to my attention, make it the last.

Mali is France's problem so why are Irish forces being involved or is it just to prove what good Europeans we are, and so Shatter can earn some more brown nose points? I note that he isn't going. Shatter would be better off deploying the defence forces to the border region to crack down on criminal gangs that seem to operate there with impunity.

Mali have asked for help from the international community

    France have helped,

France is itself part of the EU and have asked for help

We are part of the EU and have offered to help.

regardless of the past, the govt here feel that we as experienced peace keepers, can help in some small capacity, in this case train the legitimate Malian forces in some way, as part of a joint unit, under British command.

Ireland has a role to play in the international community. Sure we won't get any rewards for doing so but we do have the ability to help. Its all very well concentrating on things at home but ignoring the rest of the globe is pretty narrow minded.

One thing of note is the normalisation of U.K & Ireland relations with members of the Defence Forces and the British Army being on the same mission together. Something to gain from !

Just to get you off post 666 - I'm well aware that it's the job of the Gardai to enforce the civil law but they seem to have a problem so doing in the border region.

Enough BS, or do you want to somehow turn this over to a discussion how you'd like to see Army Engineers practice blowing up / dismantling a railway line? You want to talk PDF ACP work, get a new thread started.

Anyway, back to Mali. I have to say, I misread the reports when I 1st read them, thought it would be a much bigger deployment that it is. (got a smidgen dusty-eyed to think how much had to happen for relations to get so good between us) Still a major step in the right direction, looking forward to seeing pics of the two uniforms working side-by-side. A powerful statement to the int. community (and a middle finger to the flegs boys).

    More please.

We've worked alongside the Brits before in KFOR, SFOR and ISAF.

The British were also a large part of the MNF in Beirut while we served with UNIFIL in the south.

We've also cross border co-operation in policing and defence, plus we send a lot of students on courses with the BA and them to us.

It wouldn't even raise an eye brow in work tbh.

Is this such a problem for you?

Perhaps you'd like to go out under command of the local Malian Defence Force.

After all, they have FAR more experience of keeping the peace than either the Irish or the British.

I've taught a good few Irish students in the unit in which I worked, first of all as an instructor, and then, for my last five years service, as Chief Instructor.

The only complaints I ever heard was that the Guiness here in yUK was not up to the usual standard.

Yeah, you lot don't know how to pour it properly. It's not a milk shake.

Hey, don't blame me, I'm not a barman, and I'm not even 'you lot' either. I live here, that's all.

But I also live in Ontario and Oregon.

No doubt they don't pour it properly either - not being a drinker of spirituous beverages of any kind, I really wouldn't know. It ALL tastes like bat's p!ss to me.

Ah tac, bat's p!ss????? Surely even Dr. Peppers would be better than that. :D:D

On second thoughts, maybe not :D:D

Me, I'm a Mountain Dew [no-cal] man myself. Anyhow, good luck to the Irish guys going out there, and, indeed, to ALL. It really is a total shirthole of a place.
