Is there a recommended way of leaving a school so that you remain on good terms with the instructor ?.

Why are you leaving?
If its down to decent reason just tell him, If it's because there brutal just tell them you want to try something new and thank them for helping you.

No need to tell them you know they're muck!

I just said that the training times no longer suited and I was going to try something else that trained at more convenient times for me for a while and I'd probably be back in the future.

It worked fine.

Tell him you slept with his missus and you feel awkward training with him now so you are going to go train in the rival club down the road.:)
