Just wondering on new home theatre systems/surround sound does the sound from the tv come through the HDMI cable?

I am looking at buying a new tv and system and just wondering as on my old system I had to connect my tv via wth headhpone socket and I'm sure there must be a better way to do this.

Should I be looking for a HD sourround sound system? Thinking my budget of a bout £600 might not stretch far enough.....don't really need a dvd player/blue ray as I normally just use my raspberry pi.

So I suppose my question is how do i know that the sound from tv channels/raspberry pi will go through the surround sound. Is there a specific HDMI type connection I should be looking for?

Yes. A HDMI cable carries both HD audio and video. If buying a new Home Theatre it should be equipped with same, normally 2/3/4 in and 1 out. HDMI cable goes from Source (DVD, Sky Box, Rasp Pie etc) to Home theatre. Another HDMI cable will go from Home Theatre to TV. These are all the same type of connection, and from memory the latest Rasp Pie has a standard HDMI connection. However if you dont want a HT, a HDMI straight from Rasp Pie to TV will carry sound also. Older Rasp Pie didnt have a HDMI connection, they had a composite connection I think.

on a 3 year old panny tv i have a spdif out which i plug into a sound bar to give me surround sound.
on sat boxes i hook up spdif to input of onkyo amp for 5-1 sound because it leaves the hdmi inputs for other things.

The feature I was looking for was ARC. The sound system I got didn't have it so have to exchange for one that does... although now I'm worried that the TV i got won't have it! Tv has minimal connections! So was quite disappointed Friday when I realised! My own fault for not doing enough research!

    Phew it does have ARC.

So the one cable between the tv and sound system is all that's required. IF i connect the raspbery pi to the TV and TV is connected to sound system will I get surround sound? Or will I need to connect the pi directly to the sound system I wonder....
