Just bought a VW Passat estate 2.0DSG. Checked the VRT before I bought it and it was €3100.

So I booked a date with the vrt people for early this week. But when I checked the vrt again it has dropped to €1950!!!

I will be delighted if this turns out to be true although I can't understand why there is such a massive difference???

    Any ideas?

Who cares, just get in there quick and pay it before it goes up! The whole VRT thing is a lottery.

Ok so booked the car in for assessment at the next available date (which is tomorrow morning), got a bank draft for the amount from the VRT print out. (€1950)

But just re-checked the revenue website and the amount has more than doubled to €3,900!!! Cant believe it. Dont have the money to pay it. Massive descrepency...

Will the assessment people go by my original revenue print out or the higher amount?

They go with vrt given on the day you go to register it.I'm pretty sure it says on nct.ie faq

I find that the VRT people assume a higher emission figure than the actual. When the real emission figure is put in the VRT drops quite a lot.

    Could this explain your figures?

Yes i know. But the system is just so flawed. How can they justify such a massive difference in vrt.

If I had of managed to get a cancellation yesterday I would of paid €1950 but if i go to pay the VRT today I have to pay €3900!

    It is not right.

Thanks, but this isnt the case. I had checked this numerous times and they are both the same.

I phoned revenue to ask for an explaination and they were no help whatsoever. They just said that you must get the car assessed and the NCT people will determine the value.

    In a word, no...

They monitor the site and "adjust" the OMSP for cars experiencing a lot of "activity" on the ros.ie website. The exact same thing happened to me about 3 months ago except my VRT went up by c. €1,200 in a week (between me test driving the car and buying it) after I posted about the pricing of the car on another forum. I had printouts and figures to prove that they were messing with the actual OMSP and not the depreciation rate, which made it blindingly obvious what they were up to.

At least you have the original VRT quotes so you have a really strong case to appeal it, I did and got a reasonably big refund; they admitted to overvaluing the car by over 20%.

Out of interest what has changed? The current OMSP or the depreciation rate of the car? In my case they increased the OMSP by €5k in the space of a week, which was a total joke.

Yes the OMSP has changed by over 5 grand in a week.

So just to clarify did you just go ahead and pay it then appeal? How long did the appeal process take?

What happens if you dont have the money to appeal? Can you set something sorted before paying?

Can you rebook for another day?

Although I think the figures are updated monthly

Yeah, I paid it and appealed it… there is no other choice. The NCT centre don’t have the option to adjust the VRT, only to accept payment for what’s on the revenue system. I think it took around a month to get my refund through. If there’s no way you can access / borrow the additional cash you could chance driving on UK plates for a while but if you get caught you risk getting the car impounded and a fine.

I posted about the VRT and pricing of my car on another motoring forum, my car isn’t too common in ROI so it would probably slip below the VRT radar. I’m certain that between me inputting various combo’s of years and mileages and other people who read my forum post doing the same it must have significantly increased the VRT activity for my model on ros.ie and set off an alert of sorts which caused them to increase the OMSP in anticipation of a car or a few cars being imported. I’d guess something similar happened to you.

If it makes you feel any better you’re not the only one it happened to, I got proper ridden, after the VRT inspection at the NCT office I was charged €2,400 over the original ros.ie quote (€1,200 for the €5k OMSP increase + €1,200 for extras on the car). Although doubling from €1,950 to €3,900 is a very bitter pill to swallow. I’d be almost certain if you lodge an appeal attaching the original quote then you’ll get a refund, sounds like they haven’t got a leg to stand on in your case.

If the VRT amount doubled, and the emissions are the same, does that mean the OMSP doubled in a week?

Thanks for the info. What do you reckon would happen if I didn't pay it. But sent an appeal/query straight into revenue? Would they entertain looking at re-evaluating it?

I have a UK licence and NI family home address that I can register the car to in the meantime.

Yes they pretty much doubled the omsp of the car and also changed the depreciation percentage. F**king criminal.

I’m no authority on VRT, I’m just going on my experience (brought in 2 cars in the last 18 months, 2 appeals and 2 refunds) but I would assume if you contact them now, prior to paying the VRT they’ll just tell you tough sh1t, that’s the price, pay it and appeal it if you want.

A UK licence and an NI address would certainly help but I wouldn’t like to risk going around on a yellow reg for too long.

Totally agree with you, it is fcuking criminal. It’s a deceptive and underhanded way to operate an already inequitable system. The stunts they pulled with me (which I caught them out at) are significantly more underhanded than randomly just increasing the OMSP, I’m not going to talk too much about my own case on a public forum but feel free to PM me if you want more details.
