eircom vs satellite(onwave)

Just a quick query from those who may know better.

After a successful rant on the Eircom boards (a big thanks to Alan) I have been informed that contrary to numerous telephone calls, that I can get Eircom Broadband.

The kicker is that my line will be limited to 2mb speed with a possible 3mb max.

I currently have onwave satellite bb and they have just increased their offering. They can increase my d/l speed from 12 to 20mb, my upload from 6 to 8. And increase my allowance from 16gb to 20gb, and all for approx €55 -- down from €59. I would have to sign up for a new 24 month contract though.

    Heres my question.

The speed with onwave is never an issue, the d/l allowance is a problem. I want to use Netflix and Sky on demand and would not even consider these with such a small allowance. As it is I have to restrict the children on youtube to stop hitting the limit. My wife works from home and has a high volume of emails that would use a lot.

So, with Eircoms high allowance is the 2-3mb speed usable for netflix etc. Im not into downloading music/movies etc but sky on demand is appealing to me.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also do you have to pay line rental on top of the advertised price of €50 for Eircom bb, if so Sky or Vodafone becomes an option I would have thought with no line rental. All providers seem to offer the phone cheaply. I barely use the onwave phone at all.

    Regards,
    NH

Stay away from OnWAVE - at least with eircom you've minimal latency and will have a basic level of service. Onwave are a disaster. Couldn't load a browser or speed test... and tech support suggest to use it "off peak" that they're not responsible for the satellite service...

A 2Mb sync will give throughput of 1.6Mb. Barely enough for YT or netflix at all, not really enough for netflix tbh, you'd have regular breaks to buffer.

The limits would help but if speeds are so much better with the current provider they seem like a better choice.

I have Eircom 3mb and all I get is max 1.7mb download speed
This is enough for netflix at standard definition and also youtube.
The d1000 modem they supplied is crap - dropping speed all the time ( and i tried 2 of them ) Now I use their old modem which gives much more reliable connection .
So if they supply d1000 chuck it in the bin if you have a dodgy line like me .
