    its on the borderline of illegal and kinda illegal.

    They don't actually host any files themselves they just search various sources elsewhere online.

    In much the same way the tv show streaming apps are there and same with online.

    The files as they are found are usually hit with a DMCA notice and removed which is why you can often get failed downloads or links.

    As for how simple make money?

    Adware! The ads they show allow

    -popup ad banners
    -aquiring your position
    -phone status information
    -making phone calls

    the adware they use is .inmobi

    edit- they also use inneractive and mobfox too
