cpu fan noise

Hey guys, wondering could anyone advise me
i'm getting intermittent noise on my dell studio i'm pretty sure it's the fan on the cpu and i'm sure i can feel play in the bearing
    it's a q9400 processor with a stock cooler
i suppose i could by a cooler, but it's getting on a bit and i'm gonna change the computer sometime soon
can i just by a fan? (that would be cheaper than a full cooler)
it measures 70mm at the screw holes centre to centre

what do i need to look for to replace it?
is there different connections and air flows on what you'd buy

Why don't you buy a new cooler that you can use in your next system?

It would also allow you to overclock that processor some if you need a bit more power.

A good budget option would be the coolermaster hyper 212 evo which can be mounted to all new boards as well as older 775 boards.

    Its dell, no overclocking.

    Ah of course.

I'd still replace the cooler though.

I'm starting to think you have shares in coolermaster :p

I should be getting paid at this rate tbh.

do them coolers come with paste? or do i have to buy some?
and do they use the same type connection to the board?

be a little concerned trying to get a new cooler into a dell case - if anything like the ones ive worked with, they are very economical with space... and often have plastic ducting specific to the cooler. Dont know the model though, so mightnt be the case here

probably be easier to just replace the fan - sounds like a standard sized 80mm case fan. Just the connection on the end needs to be checked, and matched (probably a 3pin motherboard connection, but needs to be doublechecked). Dont need to pull the motherboard out of the case either if just swapping the fan - again, can be a bit of a pain with a Dell

Cooler is a waste on a dell as no over clocking, get a quiet fan from:

so the connection on the board is like this

ah grand, yea think those are PWM based fans - just if you're searching

just had another look and there isn't a hope of fitting a cooler like http://lb.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?adp=0&aid=59387&agid=669&apop=0
the psu is on top and very near the board and the chip is very near the edge of the board
so i ordered a cheap crappy one of ebay lol as i am gonna build, probably in the next 6 months
thanks for the info (the name of the connection type especially)

just on the build, is there any price drops coming soon?
i read somewhere there's new chips out this year, not that i'd go for top of the range but if there does will it make i5-3570K come down?

If you cant over clock a replacement fan should do and i it's a dell might not have lots of room so get a small tower cooler or orb type. Check you measurements inside case.

Zalman do a few of these types but they might be 3 pin with a manual adjuster.

the fan came and i put it in now when i turn on the computer i get a cpu fan failure message
the fan is spinning and seems to work fine
this is the type of fan i got http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Arctic-Cooling-Arctic-F8-PWM-80mm-Case-Fan-/360591261741?pt=UK_Computing_Case_Fans&hash=item53f4ea002d&_uhb=1

    so any ideas??

matches the connection on the motherboard alright? you've it plugged into the correct motherboard header? one should be labeled 'cpu' or the like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭ancuncha

it seems that what i got was a fan to add in to a pwm socket as there is only 2 wires going to the fan and a short tail coming of the pwm male with a female pwm

so the board doesn't know is the fan spinning

Ah yea- Dells have that feature alright... I'm not too sure from your description, but I think what's not connected is the 'sense' and the 'control' wires (green & blue?). With the mobo getting nilch from the sense wire.. well you know the rest.

Can you see if there's anything in the bios to not halt on CPU fan failure? Or ideally, have you a soldering iron? :P cause by the sounds of it, it's probably stuck on 100%?

i've been through the bios a few times and there is nothing there
i'm handy enough soldering, what would i need to do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,044 ✭✭✭Wossack

I'd be looking into combining the current 2pin+2pin setup you've got now into a single 4pin - and, depending on how it looks, may not even need a soldering iron

are the plugs off the new fan the 4 pin type you need? though with just 2 wires into them?
does it look possible to remove the individual female pin piece out of the plugs? ie seperating the metal from the plastic / disassembling the plugs - typically with a needle / small screwdriver
If so, just need to disassemble them both, and reassemble into one complete 4wire/4pin plug
