Should the PS4 ship with a HDMI cable?

As yáll know, Sony STILL to this day do not ship a HDMI cable with the console  - which imo is flippin' stupid!....I mean, how much would it cost them?....20 cent?

I think with the next gen supporting spec 1.4a it is *essential* they ship a HDMI 1.4a cable as standard!

Why should they. I have a load of them I got for about €2 each just lying around. Epson stopped supplying USB cables with their printers years ago and people just get their own. Cuts down on electrical waste at the end of the day.

I know where Richard is going with this.

It would make sense since the primary way of actually displaying the picture is through HDMI.

If Nintendo can do it with the WiiU, then what is stopping Sony from not doing the same? Sony can't stay on the same propitiatory display connector (The AV-Multi out thingy (I forgot the name)) forever.

I can see where it would be an annoyance for people but HDMI cables are so cheap and freely available that it doesn't bother me.

My PS3 currently has a HDMI connected, so when the PS4 arrives, i'll already have a HDMI to use.

Around 30% of people don't own a HDTV but I'd imagine almost 100% of next-gen console purchasers will own one so maybe it would be an idea to ship with one.

Generally manufacturers will try and cut any corners they can in terms of costs especially when they are going to be making a huge loss on each unit.

HDMI cables are cheap and plenty PS3 owners have one anyway.
Plus, considering what the new Gen will cost, a cheap HDMI cable shouldn't be an issue.

If it's made clear that it won't ship with one, then that's fine, as buyers will know to get one in advance.

I work in IT for a large company. New hardware ships with kettle leads (sometimes a UK and Euro cable) that we just send off for recycling. There's a a lot of waste.

They'll include whatever proprietary AV cable it'll come with but no HDMI.

They shouldn't bother. I'll be replacing mine with a gold-plated, air free, 4D, HD, super-max, ultra-speed, 4000, made from only the finest unobtainium. Plebs the lot of you!

You must have got it as an extra in a bundle. Sony has never released an SKU with a HDMI cable in the box.

I purchased a PS3 in March 2012 (I know, I am VERY late to the party) and it was a Slim model and it didn't come with a HDMI cable...just the regular AV cable with a SCART converter.

Some people already have HDMI cable(s), so why should they? It would be an extra cable that probably no one would want. Grant you that, they are expensive compared to other cables, but they are getting cheaper

There's no point in talking about whether it'll be 1.4a or older, and if the PS4 can output 4k video then it'll likely be one of the first with HDMI 2.0 which for an end of 2013 release on the console would be possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,968 ✭✭✭aindriu80

Yes I think so. I have seen them for really cheap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,221 ✭✭✭circadian

Just makes sense they would. Unless they want to go to the effort of including an a/v out for HD component. I think there's more money saved for them to use HDMI than support a platform that's barely in use and having to manufacture the hardware for it.
Does anyone play games on a non HD telly these days? Last time I tried it was pants and not worth the effort.

Mine definitely did not come with a HDMI cable, see receipt attached, serious money !
HDMI cables were a lot more expensive and not as obtainable at the time.

That's what they cost on launch day, the biggest thing that sickens me about that receipt is Spider-Man costing €70, what a brutal game.

For my original PS3 60gb on launch day(I was only just 14 at the time, so it was my birthday and Christmas present) I paid

    PS3 + resistance FOM + casino royale Blu ray = £459.99
    Sonic the hedgehog = 44.99

And I didn't get a bloody HDMI cable

Ah come on lads, just because you personally happen to have a few floating around isn't reason to not include one! Think of the people that bring one home, open the box and discover there's no hdmi cable there.

I have a load of power leads at home, but I still expect the PS3 to have one in the box. They're just standard too.
It should come with everything you need to get up and running imho, and I have about 20 poxy hdmi leads at home!
Here's a good one I recommend for the ps4 :pac:

Or you could go to the new Dealz stores and get one for €1.49.

Please dont give me the different quality can of worms, i cant tell the difference, i dont care.

I think you're wrong, poor quality HDMI cables can cause issues where jitter forms and deteriorates what should be a quality image, or a deeply powerful sound. The Audioquest Coffee HDMi cable is an upgrade solution that will give a great improvement in general aspects of HD sources when travelling via a HDMI cable.

Fair enough you have your more educated HDMI theories/opinions/facts. £369 for a HDMI cable is a bit mad though.

I'd describe it as totally insane to pay that. I can only assume he's taking the mick with that suggestion.
€5 to €10 is the max you need to spend.

Just taking the piss I just copied and pasted the blurb on the audioquest site about that cable. I use the cheapest cables, you can get them for about €2 on amazon!

I'd say yes. Sure they can be bought cheap, if you know which shops to go to, or where to order'em online. Most shop's people go to will sell'em for 10 to 15 euro though. This isn't something Sony is concerned about, but Id be peeved if I got something and didn't have everything I needed for it. Whats next? Generic kettle plugs so they don't have to supply power leads? FFS...

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,689 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 didn't support analogue picture at all, i.e. no scart or component output, and would only have HDMI. If that's the case then I think they should include a HDMI cable. At the very least they have to include one cable so that it's usable out of the box.
Did all of you miss the point?....I said HDMI 1.4a

There's no difference between a "HDMI 1.4a" cable or any other, except possibly for price.

Yes. What are they? 2 euro now? It's not exactly much more for them to put a HDMI in rather than the old leads. It would help a lot of people who don't know to use HDMI instead of the given leads as they'll end up with better quality graphics and quality for movies, truly showing off why the PS4 should be bought.

For those who have not got HD TV's (the dying breed), Sony could stock the old AV leads in aswell, for the 50 cents it'll cost them extra.

Just do a straight swap and include the HDMI instead of the old one. If you're getting a PS4, you're more than likely going to also have a fairly recent TV to play it on too.

Considering the digital switch over throughout the EU has happened, 95% of people must have a tv with hdmi input at this stage. They should just ditch the composite altogether.

In my best estimation, HDMI cables will not be shipped with the ps4 for the same reasons the ps4 will not be backwards compatible. Money and cost cutting
    Even though they should be

Whilst they need to keep the price down, the extra cost of adding an HDMI cable will be pennies to Sony in the volumes that they're talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 721 ✭✭✭Pixelbastardo

Yeah, its pretty stupid how they dont, i mean they stuck in a bluray player in the ps3 that jacked up the price of the console to move their new video format bluray, yet didnt even provide the cable necessary to view the content, and then they start pushing 3D games and movies to go with their new line of 3DTVs, all of which need it too.
If their going to provide any sort of TV cable in the ps4, they may aswell make it a hdmi cable for the love of god..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 105 ✭✭trev179

Well I'm not gonna fall out with sony if they don't include one but it would be nice of them considering I paid €480 for the console (which died) then bought a super slim for €200 not to mention the €100's on games and dlc over the years :(
