INVERCARGILL: Drinking too much Coke killed mother of eight Natasha Harris, a New Zealand coroner has found.
Ms Harris drank up to 10 litres of Coke every day – equal to more than twice the recommended safe daily limit of caffeine and almost 1 kilogram of sugar.
She died aged 30, on February 25, 2010, from a cardiac arrest. Her partner, Christopher Hodgkinson, found her seated on the toilet, slumped against the wall and gasping for air.

Natasha Harris, who died in February 2010, after drinking up to 10 litres of Coke a day.

Coca-Cola has argued that the huge quantities of Coke drunk daily by Ms Harris day could not be proven to have contributed to her death.
But in findings released on Tuesday, New Zealand coroner David Crerar said Ms Harris would not have died if it wasn’t for her dependence on Coke.
‘‘I found that, when all of the available evidence is considered, were it not for the consumption of very large quantities of Coke by Natasha Harris, it is unlikely that she would have died when she died and how she died.’’
In the months leading up to her death her health had deteriorated, Mr Hodgkinson said.
‘‘She had no energy and was feeling sick all the time ... She would get up and vomit in the morning.’’
He said her Coke habit had become an addiction: ‘‘She would get moody and get headaches if she didn’t have any Coke and also feel low in energy.’’
Mr Hodgkinson’s mother Vivian said Mr Harris got ‘‘withdrawal symptoms’’ if her Coke ran out, including getting ‘‘the shakes’’ and becoming angry.

The family did not consider Coke was harmful because its labels do not contain warning signs.

The coronial decision revealed Ms Harris likely suffered from a myriad of medical conditions, including a racing heart and ‘‘absent teeth’’, which her family say had rotted out from Coke consumption.
They contend, also, that the amount of Coke Ms Harris drank ruined her children’s teeth, with at least one of her kids being born without enamel.
Ms Harris drank up to 10 litres per day, the coroner estimated – which works out to more than twice the recommended daily caffeine consumption and more than 11 times the recommended sugar intake.
In a statement, Coca Cola said: "The Coroner acknowledged that he could not be certain what caused Ms Harris' heart attack. Therefore we are disappointed that the Coroner has chosen to focus on the combination of Ms Harris’ excessive consumption of Coca-Cola, together with other health and lifestyle factors, as the probable cause of her death. This is contrary to the evidence that showed the experts could not agree on the most likely cause".

lol at the "advertisement" in the middle of that quoted article. Is it for Coke?

Crazy stuff. Family obviously looking for a compo payout at some point - no warning labels on coke etc.

More and more people refuse to take personal responsibility for their actions. How they thought drinking so much coke daily wouldn't impact on her health is beyond me.

I think I drink less than a litre of coke a year

    "Husband of Coke Victim"

    That made me giggle.

    Also, what an idiot.

You don't need a warning to know that drinking 10 litres of anything a day is bad for you.

With that many medical issues I'm sure a qualified doctor told her it was harmful. I imagine she was diabetic to start with...

10 litres is equal to 21 pints.so 21 pints of guinness a day for a week, ten days and youd be dead for sure.
so im sure some people would pass a bit of heed as you put it.

We've all heard about how putting coins in a glass of Coke will strip off the layers of dirt and grime- how someone could claim to "not know" that excessive amounts of it are harmful is beyond me.

She obviously had some mental health problems (certainly with addiction), so somebody could have helped her at some point in the process.

Too much of pretty much anything will kill you.

Cue this story being twisted into one that drinking 1 litre will kill you.

I'd say the the story about not seeing warning labels is either of monumental idiocy or one to try and shift blame onto Coke and get some kind of compensation from them.

Sure they would, that's 20 pints. Nobody could drink that daily and live.

As far as the story goes, something tells me that drinking coke all day wasn't her only issue - if she is this blase about her health other factors probably contributed to her heart-attack. I totally believe though that she wouldn't think it harmful: I wonder if any family member stepped in to tell her she was ruining her health (she had no teeth ffs).. most likely they were enabling her.

    The label would have listed
    Energy 180KJ, 42Kcal/100ml
    sugar 10.6g /100ml

Coke is OK in moderation, but 10 litres contains
    18MJ energy
    4,200 Calories
    1.06 Kg sugar

    http://www.nrv.gov.au/energy.htm - this is a little complicated though :(

she was taking in 18MJ/day in coke

18.6 MJ/day is the maximum recommended intake
and that's for a 2m tall 88Kg male under 30 who is undergoing daily 6. Significant amounts of sport or strenuous leisure activity in addition to 2, 3 or 4 above

Some people need everything pointed out to them in big block letters.

I'd say they're the reason why you see the "phone not included" or "cat not included" text under the product in the catalogues, just incase they thought they were getting a crazy bargain.

This woman obviously needed someone to intervene medically / psychologically a long time before it got to this stage.

Coca Cola is a sugary drink, but so are lots of things. There's nothing particularly unusual about it. I think it's a bit unfair to blame them on what is clearly a very tragic eating disorder that could have had an underlying organic cause.

There are for example certain brain tumors / damage that can cause someone to have an insatiable desire for water to the point that they'll drink enough to put themselves at risk of death.

Drinking 10L of fluid would indicate something more serious than caffeine addiction! Also NZ mostly has a cool temperate climate so it'd be unlikely she was dehydrated due to heat or something.

10 litres of coke a day, and they really didn't think it'd have adverse affects? Even if the woman had some sort of psychological issue or illness that forced her to drink that much coke (which I doubt), her family saying they didn't think that'd be dangerous is just ridiculous. Like duggy said, it's sounding like they want to try and get compensation for this, as cruel as that sounds.

The label shows an RDA for carbs. Drinking 10 litres a day you would exceed your RDA and that ain't good. They don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to a case.

If you drink more than 4 litres of water in one sitting it will kill you. Many of the people that supposedly died from MDMA really died from water poisoning.

Ten litres in a day? Christ. I'd buy a two litre bottle every now and then and that'd last me about a week. If I drank any more than that, I'd feel sick.

Also there shouldn't be warning lables to state that drinking that much of anything is a bad idea. It should be common bloody sense.
