USGS reporting seismic activity measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale. Most signs point to it being a successful nuclear test.

I still think it's mad tho. The United States has had nuclear weapons since 1945. You'd think the knowledge and people are out there for other countries to of gotten nuclear weapons well before now. I know economy comes into it ... but still... yanks had it since 1945. You would think more countries would have the same power knowing the decades that have passed.

The knowledge is definitely out there. The actual mechanism of nukes isn't a big secret. What's difficult it the enrichment of uranium and creation of the weapons with the UN Security Council not wanting you to get them. They're not cheap either.

Yeah. He needs to use a capital O in 'ok' at the start of the sentence.

No need for a capital D in 'Done'.

'There' should be spelled They're in both instances in the second sentence.

And he left out the full stop at the end.

I'm on the subway on my way to work here in Seoul. Nobody seems to be too bothered.

Strange for them to test it today though. It's New Year's celebrations these couple of days. One of the most important holidays in the year.

If North Korea were any kind of a real threat. The US would blow them out of the water.

639,000 active and over 3 million reserve force in South Korea along with over 30,000 Korean based U.S force would storm the DMZ on the ground and through the air

40,000 US marines based on the west coast of japan with 18 US Navy war ships, Including destroyers, amphibious assault ships, command ships, attack submarines, avengers, ballistic missile and guided missile Cruisers.

NK isn't going to launch a nuke at the US

Even if they haven't already smuggled in some ex soviet blackmarket bombs you could buy everything you need to make a fertilizer bomb in the US.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_City_Disaster
The fire detonated approximately 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate[1] and the resulting chain reaction of fires and explosions killed at least 581 people, including all but one member of the Texas City fire department.[2] These events also triggered the first ever class action lawsuit against the United States government, under the then-recently enacted Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), on behalf of 8,485 victims.

The knowledge is definitely out there. The actual mechanism of nukes isn't a big secret. What's difficult it the enrichment of uranium and creation of the weapons with the UN Security Council not wanting you to get them. They're not cheap either.
Indeed, rockets capable of reliably travelling more than a few hundred km with an atomic payload are insanely expensive. Even though they've been around for a long time now, it's not the kind of thing someone can build in their back garden during the summer.

Funny thing about the reporting on this is how the writing is loaded. The assumption is that North Korea's plan is to build an atomic weapon which is capable of being fired at the US. One of them said, "This atomic test – North Korea’s third since 2006 – is expected to take Pyongyang closer to possessing nuclear-tipped missiles designed to strike the United States."

Considering they're at war with South Korea, which is considerably closer than the US, I'm going go with the more obvious thought and assume they're designing it for use against South Korea. Typical of the US to assume that anyone possessing nuclear weapons, plans on using it on them. "Look out Ned, he's coming straight for us, shoot him!"

NK isn't religious fundamentalist, I don't think they see any benefit in nuking the rest of the world. And Jong-Un isn't an idiot. I suspect his plan is to have these weapons as a bargaining chip as he eases trade restrictions and gradually opens up North Korea to the rest of the world, in the same way that China has done.
If the country is known as a nuclear power then the UN will be less antagonistic when negotiating on trade agreements, dropping embargoes, etc.

    This!

Thing is though, if they unexpectly attacked Seoul, a city of 20+ million could easy be wiped out.

Korea and Koreans can be pretty strange though so they won't make much of this. Just asked my Korean friend and they aren't bothered at all.

They'll just say shipseki to the great leader and go on with their lives.

I mean what do you know about this guy? What does anyone know about him? Nothing. Total dictatorship and you want Americans to trust nuclear weapons with a guy who claims to be developing them to strike at the US with. In fact that is about all we know about him.

Excuse me if I don`t blame the yanks if they turn North Korea into glass with some instant sunshine.

I can only imagine more of the same. NK was going down this road before he took over.

It's not clear if he's actually in power or a puppet.

I don't think taking him out would be the answer. And it's possibly one scenario that could lead to Seoul being vaporised.

I mean what do you know about this guy? What does anyone know about him?
He was educated in Switzerland meaning that he is at least aware of the rest of the modern world, and his reforms and public appearances since coming to power would seem to indicate that he understands the value of engaging with the rest of the world, as well as the importance of maintaining the cult of personality. So at the very least we know he's not a raving loony and has some degree of savvy.
a guy who claims to be developing them to strike at the US with
    When did he claim this?
Who's he legitimate successor to this guy if he's ever taken out by the Americans? It seems as though its the only viable option left.
He has a number of brothers and a child. Chances are if he was taken out, one of his brothers would step in until his child (assuming it's a boy) could take power.

Though removing him would mean his successor would have slightly diminished power. There's a good chance it could lead to a power struggle and a military coup, with his family being removed from the upper echelons of power. And a military-led North Korea with nukes would be ten times worse than Jong-Un, IMHO.
