lean versus fatty meat

Just wondering what the general thoughts are on eating fatty meat as opposed to lean meat? When I was focused on losing weight, I tended to go for lean cuts of meat, not particularly because I thought the fatty meat was unhealthy, but just because of the calorie count. I'm trying to maintain my weight now, so I feel like I can afford to experiment a little. I was in the butchers last week and he had 2 types of minced beef and I went for the higher % fat one (can't remember the cut off the top of my head) and I made chilli with it and I think it definitely has more flavour than the lean mince I usually buy (5% fat). I'll be honest, it goes against my instincts (probably learned from weightwatchers) to buy stewing beef instead of fillet steak pieces or chicken legs/thighs instead of breasts but I agree with the principle that it's wasteful to avoid the cheaper cuts (and there's the financial saving too). But is it ok from a health point of view?

Great that you're getting it from the butchers. Sounds like you're paying attention to your diet, hopefully keeping processed foods to a minimum therefore getting the cheaper, fattier cuts of meat will likely be of no issue to your health and might even be of benefit!
