I have not tried this yet but friends in the UK have saved money by getting their glasses from this website, under UK consumer law an Optician has to give you a copy of your lens prescription and allow you to shop around, the website gives full details

There's loads of prescription spectacles websites out there.
Is this one cheaper or better?
I got a basic pair for ~€9 all in from goggles4u.com a few months back.

In Ireland you can get your eye prescription to. After paying €30 for it you expect to get it. I have seen German glasses sites with prescription ray bans including lens for like €160. That's value.

I think the uk sites are a bit pricey at the moment compared to euro zone ones

    Hi,
Sorry if im spoiling the thread here but, any chance you could post a link to one of those german sites? Interested in getting a pair of prescription ray bans. A PM would be great either.

    Thanks

I second Goggles4u.com. Two new pairs arrived today for well under €40. Wasn't hit by customs either and they arrived in under 2 weeks.

Yeah I always use these, my fav site, although you have to wait a little bit longer but in my opinion it's the best value. (When no discounts going around anyway!)

We've ordered about 9 pairs from goggles for you over the last 4 years, lately they've started charging extra for basic coatings though like specsavers which is nonsense as standard lenses come coated. Still cheaper than everyone else though.

For contact lenses I use Daysoft.com, €12 incl. shipping per month is sensational.

In Ireland the Optician is legally compelled to give you the prescription.

I had reason today to phone the Irish optometrist association - and they made it crystal clear to me.

I am in the middle of dealing with a situation where a friend was 'pressured' in a Dublin city-wide chain to either pay 30 quid or buy glasses if she wanted the prescription. After me complaining to the senior area manager they are now offering to fix the situation .... based on 'miscommunication'......

However he was still trying to support their policy of not giving the prescription to everyone accepting their clearly 'no obligation' FREE eye test advertised on their web site.... based on an argument that if they did it then everyone would just exploit them. This argument just doesn't stand up.

People need to be firm and strong when faced with shop assistants who try to bring pressure. They depend on irish people's reluctance to say NO, and on vulnerable people's inability to say NO.

Just be sure your prescription is legible and clear before you use it to order online.

My first one had the minus '-' written as a long stroke above and right on the horizontal border of the numerical box. I didn't spot it, and as a result assumed I should enter '+' on the online form. Result - useless glasses arrived. Not an expensive lesson, but money wasted nonetheless.

I still think it was a dirty trick on the part of the optician, who worked for a very well-known nationwide chain.

I think its time to get a new set of specs as the last ones are a few years old now and I think I need stronger ones.
Last time I got my eyes tested in Specsavers opposite Trinity in the city centre and the prescription they gave me wasn't much use for online shopping afterwards as it didn't have all the details needed.
I found the shop assistants there very pushy about buying glasses with coatings etc and whatnot. I did get my last glasses there but felt pressurised into it and don't really want to give them my custom again as it left a bit of a bitter taste to be honest.

I'd pay a little extra for an Optometrist to give me a test and prescription without the pressure sell and that I could use online. Anyone have any recommendations in the Dublin or Bray areas?

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

The online form asks for all possible details though. Your prescription should have all you need to order online. Just be sure your prescription is clear, as per my post above.

There is an old-school optician on Capel St (Cashin is the name, I think). Might be worth a visit or phone call to get his price. I have no personal experience of him however.

I know it's a pain in the ass - but just be FIRM ! ask for the prescription and say you need to bring your G/F/Wife/Hubby in to consult on the glasses later that afternoon.... and be FIRM.

Dont know where you get your information from, standard lenses do are totally uncoated as they are just standard lenses, if u want coatings or extras be willing to pay extra anywhere.

Don't spin a story about coming back later; there is no need to lie. Just ask for a copy of your prescription, they will probably ask if you wish to try on some glasses, say "no thanks". That's it!

I went to an independent optican to get a prescription. It was €10 which was cheap but was not handed the presciption but
I suppose I wanted it for them to order me free contact lenses. But I when my brother asked for it the owner lost it with wondering why he wanted it. Were the glasses in the shop not good enough for him.

Irish opticians have seriously **** customer service. Plus they're selection is dreadful. I have been to small towns in Italy with opticians with huge ranges that are very reasonable
