Fur coats?

Have a bit of a strange one here?!

I was cleaning out my mam's wardrobe today and in it she had a fur coat that my aunt left here when she emigrated to Australia in 1970. Obviously she had no need for it in Perth. Original price tag for £800 still in it (my mam nearly died!).

It looks lovely on me, it's a knee length mixed fur coat.

I'd never buy fur myself. Anyway aunt said to take it. I'm just kind of struggling with the ethics of it, but it was bought in 1968....animal long passed away.

And it looks great. My dad said he'd never seen a nicer thing on me.

    Opinions?

I went to a party once with this fox fur around my neck, my friends mother insisted I wear it because of the cold outside. Anyway, we got kicked out of the party because of it. You will probably get a lot of bad reactions to it, is my guess.

Just because the animal has long passed away does not counteract the fact that an animal was most likely either brutally killed in the most primitive way or just stunned and skinned alive just to make a coat.

Head up to any of the Scandinavian Countries and a lot of people wear fur. The animal is dead at this stage and some people think that it is better to use all the animal in some form rather that just kill it and throw half of it in the dustbin. Only you can decide if you are comfortable with it. You can always say it's fake if you are afraid of some peoples reactions. You could point out that they are (probably) wearing leather shoes, own a leather/suede jacket etc.

I have one that's at least 50 years old and I would love to wear it but I don't have the nerve. I might try the 'it's fake' line. I was in Munich in December and lots of people were wearing fur.

If you like it, if it looks good on you, go ahead and wear it!

Well it can sit in the wardrobe, or you can wear it! Either way, it's still a coat made of fur. I don't think wearing it "condones" the fur trade. I wouldn't buy new fur as there are great synthetics out there, and of course fur extremely expensive! But I don't see a problem with second hand/vintage.

I have and wear my aunt's fur, she got it for her 21st many moons ago! It was bought in Switzer's by my grandmother.

Totally agree. If you don't want to wear it send it my way! :)

It's lovely - haven't left it off since I purloined it! Been stopped in the street four times to say how nice it is - really warm, ok was an animal once, but I didn't kill or buy animal.

I'll never understand for the life of my why there is such double standards in our society when it comes to fur.

High end make up brushes are made from animals that are likely only farmed and killed for their fur, badger, sable, mink and squirrel. The same animals fur coats are often made from. You never hear a peep out of the ethics brigade about those. I don't think I've ever seen a protest or people with red paint standing in wait outside of Brown Thomas. Good paint brushes and shaving brushes are also made from the same stuff.

That's just one example that is closest to the source, plenty of others are equally hypocritical. Leather, battery chickens etc.
