SPL Irish Rights

Would it make sense for an Irish channel to broadcast Saturday 3pm SPL games?

Considering the amount of Irish involvement in the SPL, and Celtic proving they're up there with Europe's top clubs would it not make sense for an Irish channel to try and get rights to show SPL (probably Celtic) matches on Saturday's at 3pm?

The rights surely wouldn't cost too much and with Setanta more than likely having the English Premier League games it could be good business for RTE/TV3/TG4 to show the SPL?

With low costs (presumably), a well supported club, and many Irish players, managers, etc in the league - what do you all think?

I'd rather watch a cagey LOI game on RTE between say Sligo and Bohs rather than watch Celtic hump Dundee 5 nil.

If we could afford the SPL games aswell of LOI that would be good but I'd rather have LOI games on tv if I had to choose. The amount of LOI players in the SPL shows there is not much between the leagues, apart from maybe say Celtic

Cant see anyone interested unless Setanta lost the 3pm English Premier League rights.

... if Setanta looses the 3pm games I don't they can continue in the Irish market. I think no 3pm Premier League games means no Setanta.

Would the majority of people though? Would they rather see European standard players or the likes of LOI players play ever other week?

    Number of issues here.

Firstly, with all due respect to Hibernian, Celtic are really the only SPL club with any sort of interest here. But you will find that comparatively often Celtic's games will be moved for TV so they will not always be playing Saturday at 3pm.

A TV company in Ireland will not get the viewers if Celtic are not playing. Even if they are playing the commercial realities are that it would probably not make much in the way of money being up against FA Premier League games from England on Setanta.

The other problem is the logistics. AFAIK the only 3pm games provided with live feeds are the ones BBC Alba cover which is only 15 games a season.

I can confirm Setanta asked for these rights last season when Rangers and Celtic were in the league - they were told that no such rights were for sale and dont forget the SPL still blame Setanta for their massive loss in tv revenue when setanta uk when under. So according to Setanta
the SPL will be a hard customer to deal with!

As in the FTA BBC Alba on
SKY 168 ( UK EPG if you have an old box or card )
    Freesat 110
    Astra 1N 28.2°E 10803 H MPEG-2 22000 5/6 ?

    SPL irish rights are dead

irish tv broadcasters should concentrate on the 230pm and 530pm bundesliga live games with or without the 3pm english premier league live games

How much interest do you actually think there is for the Bundesliga in Ireland? First off the only Irish broadcaster that would even consider it is Setanta but I wouldn't be surprised if all their efforts are on securing the Premier League again. Withgout the Premier League Setanta are pretty much done imo.

The Bundesliga is a much better league than the SPL and I do watch a lot of it but I know of nobody else that does.

Do you really believe it is worthwhile to a broadcaster considering the viewing numbers will be very low. Sadly I don't think it is so I will have to continue with watching it on the Eurosport 2 I get from Poland

Yes though I got the terms of that deal wrong, seems it is for 35 delayed 3pm KOs shown in full at 5:30pm and 3 live matches in timeslots that Sky or ESPN wouldn't normally be covering. So no Saturday 3pms live which isn't surprisingly really although I thought they might have gotten away with it as its in Gaelic, in similar fashion to the League of Wales where Saturday 3pm matches are shown in Welsh on S4C.

The SFA enforce the 3pm blackout so BBC Alba couldn't show a game at 3pm even if they wanted to, regardless of language. FAW never applied for this in Wales so S4C can show live games at that time. S4C also show their games in English.

No doubt the German league is probably of a better a standard, and more entertaining.

But there will definitely be more peeople in Ireland who prefer to watch Celtic than Bayern Munich or Dortmund. Simply because there are more supporters of that club

problem is when there's a race with one horse in it, no one is interested. It would be like putting a team like everton/spurs into the blue square premier and expecting people to pay money to watch it on tv. Just not happening. I couldn't even tell you who's 2nd in the spl at the moment?

Germany is very one sided this season. Bayern are romping home to the title. 17 points clear after Dortmunds draw today
