No new AMD graphics cards for 2013?

I'm not sure how seriously to take this one. Some people seem to think AMD is waiting on the next gen consoles to launch, but I can't imagine them halting production for six to nine months because of that. Devastating to the market if true though. As if NVIDIA wasn't jacking up the prices of their high-end parts already.

According to this link, NVIDIA won't be releasing anything either until December.

Interesting. Hadn't seen that. I guess the best we can expect is maybe some sort of official 7990, and NVIDIA's Titan.

Meh if Nvidia had any sense they would be dropping their prices. Amd have them beaten at every single price point, especially with games bundles on 7950's and 7970's.

I don't blame them for halting the 8000 series. They might as well let Nvidia play their hand first this time.

Nvidia should have adjusted their prices to fill the amd gaps.

The 660ti should have been a contender/beater to the 7870 at around the same price. The 670gtx should have been priced around 7950 levels and the 680gtx should not cost €100 more than a 7970.

Maybe they're too bogged down with producing chips for both the Xbox and PS4 that they've decided to hold off?

Also, maybe they want to improve their drivers? If you have a look at the differences between Pitcairn and Tahiti, the 7900 series should be much more powerful than what it is at the moment. Seeming as the HD8000 series is GCN 2.0, they might just be fine tuning.

Still though, it's not great news :(. There's nothing I like more than waking up in the morning, logging on to TechPowerUp or Anandtech and seeing a review of a brand new Radeon or Geforce.

Sort of good news. It means no need to put any money in to my pc all 2013 :D

I dont really think we need new gen of GPUs at all. Prices are better then ever thanks to AMD. If nvidia would take finger out and drop prices to normal point, then we would hit jackpot.

I presume this move proves that New gen consoles will be quite weak. With this move most likely they are stoping PC generation to run away even further!

If we have to wait a little longer so that the jump in performance is alot more I'd say its worth it,at least this should stop the "you should wait until the XXXX series cards are out, they're coming soon.." for a while at least.

A little annoying for me though. One of the main reasons I went with a 670 rather than just keeping my 580 was that I had twice as long to step-up to a new card (June sometime). Looks like my only real upgrade option will be Titan.

    How unfortunate :pac:.

Indeed. Like third world problems, only more expensive.

    = Bigger problem.

Why not go for a 2nd 670 in SLI?

Or a gtx 690 , it will still be more powerful than titan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

By the looks of things, no it won't. Some people are saying less than 690, others more. I'm inclined to think that if it's not better, it will at least be a hell of a lot more consistent, given that it won't have SLI scaling to deal with.

I could go for a second 670 now, but remembering that once someone picks up my case I'll be moving to a Prodigy. Can't quite fit two cards in there. (Yes, I know about the 7970 CF mod, shurup. :P)

    Edit: And on that note...

Bear in mind synthetic benchmark, extremely early drivers, etc.

What's the story with this thing? Is it their next gen of cards? Single gpu with 6gb's of memory?

    That ain't gonna be cheap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

    $899 price-tag, supposedly.

Rumours are that it's GK110, and that GTX 780 will be GK112.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

Crazy. You're getting 1 of these things?

I think I'll wait until next year when they both unveil their full next gen line of cards and hopefully we start seeing some proper next gen games that might actually make use of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

I might, will have to see performance, pricing, etc. If it is $899, then that'll be roughly €750-800, meaning I'd only have to pay €400-450 for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

    900$?

they can go and suck the fat one.

If they are still going same way where you pay get more performance, but pay axtra for that performance like current gen, then they can go really feck off.

Not a hope i will go near one of these Gpus for that price. this time around i will sit down and see what AMD has to show for it. I dont care what nvidia fanboys say, but AMD now has Nvidia by the balls in GPU market. If the boys in green wont take their heads out of the arses, they will have some trouble.

*For what we know this can be a 100% fake. I would even think it is a fake, butyou never know.

I know I'll get lynched for this, but is there any actual need for more powerful cards?

Is there anything that a top of the line 7970 can't run?

From a gaming perspective a HD7870 can basically run anything at 1080p (and probably anything for the next few years).

Where's the drive for more super duper cards coming from?
I would imagine that although the top cards are probably more profitable per unit, they make most of their money on the huge bulk of middle of the road cards.

At the gtx690 end of the spectrum I'd imagine that people happy to splash €500+ on a card won't really be arsed if AMD release one thats marginally worse for 50 quid less. If they're already spending that amount they'll go for the best card they can.
To use a car analogy, you don't care about spending 100k more for a Ferrari than an M5. Value for money doesn't enter into the equation.

    One word: Consoles.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but we're close to the next generation of consoles launching, and with that will come a vast improvement in graphics quality, and consequently, as vast jump in the horsepower required.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

I don't think the leap will be that big with the new consoles. Most of that horsepower is going to be used going from 720p to 1080p which will make the games look a lot better alone combined with higher res textures but technically it's not much of an improvement.

Will be some dx11 goodness thrown in but I don't think the leap is going to be quite what it was from ps2-3 and xbox-360.
