Basically I've been working in a pc repair place for about 10 years now cash in hand. Plus I have no bank account. I had one once when I just started working this job. But as it was empty it ended up being closed.

I regret ever taking this job. Was told I'd be getting €400-600 in no time. I never got more then €250 a week and never got to work over 30 hours a week. The past few years I only get about 150 a week because there just aint the same amount of work coming in. I've been wanting to leave the job since year 3-4 but just never bothered to actually try.

I only ever got the comptia + cert and never bothered to keep improving my education. I am perfectly willing to do some course's. I do want to keep working in IT but just not on the tech support phones.

I have tried getting a bank account twice mind you. But no bills or post comes to my home for me. I could claim to live at home with parents and I suppose I could suck it up even though I'd feel embarrassed to be thought of still living with my parents but I could get over it. But They live in a different country and they themselves don't live in a town with a bank :/

I'm nearly 30 and I just want to get out of this drain I'm circling. I'm always completely broke and can't even date. So advice on best way to go about getting a bank account and whether to get myself back into education and/or work would be helpful.

    Hey,

I'm just wondering why you have as yet been unsuccessful in setting-up a bank account...? Sorry, maybe I just misunderstood what you wrote.

Getting out of difficult and/or unhappy situations is about taking baby steps. As a start, you could create a CV and then e-mail it to recruitment agencies and/or directly to employers.

Changing your life for the better is about altering habits ... slowly.

I couldn set up a bank account because normally you'd have to give them a proof of address. Such as a bill. As I said I don't have any mail coming to my house for me at all, I have no proof. A friend went to AIB and they just sent him out a letter that he was to bring in and use as proof. I asked could they do the same and I was told they don't do that. The last thing they said was to get a letter sent out to me from.....em...hmm. I can't remember the name of the place. Don't remember it being called the tax office but someplace that deals with tax's maybe. Perhaps with an eagle on there letterhead.

Ring the tax office, and get them to send you out a p21 it's a balancing statement, you don't have to be working to have one and when it arrives use that to open your bank account.

Eagle Star insurance? What Morag suggest sounds like a good option though.

Hmm's but see as far as they know I still live in the house I grew up in. Which has since been sold. So I'd have to get them to change the address but what if they need proof too >_<

No, definitely not an insurance place. But I think it was the tax office but they said Revenue office or something. http://www.revenue.ie is the right place I was told I think. I don't know where I was getting the eagle from.

It's no harm to just try to get them to change your address (telephone or just walk into the offices). Nothing will be done unless you make a move...

In life, one must stay on top of things like this, unfortunately. I've moved quite a lot in my life (3 different countries), so am used to it all.

When you ring them tell them you have changed adress and they will sort you out, you just need your date of birth and your pps number.

first thing you need to do is set up an accout ASAP. I wont add to that, other advice here is perfect.

Regarding your job. start looking for something else. After 3/4 years, 150 a week is an insult considering promises and Im sure effort you have made. Might be no harm to look for retail work out there. And why not invest in doing some courses. dont stay in this rut any longer if its getting you down.

Having no money somewhat prevents me from being able to invest :P But yeah I'd be completely open to doing some.

Figure out a way to get into the system so you could do a springboard course maybe? (google it)

I agree, you have to get out of that job and into the system asap. Start looking for another job (that pays tax) asap.

Where do the ESB bills go?

None of the bills are in my name. So they come to my housemates. And no we're not going to try put them in my name.

You can add your name to the bill easily enough. That will be enough to open an account.

If you want to change the situation you are in, you have to be prepared to take action and do some things differently. It is not going to happen by itself.

You don't say? You know I've only been thinking about what to do from time to time for ten years. So I think by now I'd have realised doing nothing about it will get me nowhere. Which is why I came on here to find out the best way to go about it.

I thought bills can only be in one persons name. But anyway I've already decided on doing what Morag said. As its something that needs to be done anyway.

If you are working cash in hand, then more than likely your employment will not be registered with Revenue. If this is the case Revenue won't be able to issue you with a P21, as a P21 is a statement of your pay and tax. Do you even get payslips? If you employment is not registered Revenue won't be able to issue anything out to you.

Maybe ring Department of Social Protection and get them to send you out a letter confirming your pps number, you will then be able to use this letter when opening your bank account.

The bills in our house are in two names, so it definitely can be done. It's a relatively easy method to get proof of address.

Like each individual bill is in two names? I've just never heard of this. Electricity is in one housemates name and UPC in the others here.

I think the Department of Social Protection is what your thinking of with the Eagle on the letter head, they have a bird as their logo

When my brother was getting his first bank account years ago he had no bills or the like and they sent him there.
Hopefully you will have an office near you

Well I just filled out a online form to request a new Social Services Card. I explained in the additional comments box that I don't live in the address they'd have for me as my parents sold that house many years ago. They'll probably ring me though to confirm some extra details.

SpikeStain, people are taking time out of their lives to reply to you with advice that you asked for.

Some advice might be relevant to you, some might not. Some people might suggest things that you have thought of already, others might suggest things you have never thought about.

There's no need to be dismissive of anyone's advice. You asked for ways to "go legit" - people offered those to you.

Anyway, as you seem to have resolved your issue of having something posted to your address, I will close this thread.

    All the best.

Edit: Thread reopened after PM from OP. He has gotten advice on the address issue, but is still looking for advice on how to get into work, through courses, certs etc..
