We'll be wearing Puma until next season at least apparently.

We will be wearing Puma as far away as the June tour of Argentina in 2014.

Strange. I thought the contract was until summer 2014 anyhow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

    Ah.
Basically, Puma are letting the IRFU keep the gear and paid a settlement, thereby creating an 18-month window to find a new kit sponsor.

So if they find a sponsor before then it could be as early as the summer tour. I wouldn't be surprised to see an investing sponsor by summer tbh.

I'd like to see Warrior get into rugby and supply Ireland's kit. I love what they've done with Liverpool's merchandise, eschewing the drive for more outlandish designs and going for a classic looking kit. It would make a welcome change from the last few monstrosities Ireland have worn by Canterbury and Puma.

I hope Under Armour get it.

Bit OT guys, but I've just been on the Lovell rugby site and they're flogging the Irish puma RC2011 alternate shirt for £15. bit of a bargain I reckon, just ordered one myself..nice clean shirt and no corporate logo...

Yep picked one up myself as I destroyed the home one in the wash.
    Lovely jersey.

Adidas, please! The NZ, France and Italy kits are lovely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 113 ✭✭PaulyBolger

Adidas - too focused on ABs, Italy and France
UA - quite possibly, they want to get into rugby more
Macron - maybe, might be too tied up with edinburgh and their new scotland contract.
Kukri - don't think they have the facilities
    OB - ^^^
Canterbury - most likely, but for the reason that every other team has CCC, i don't think they'd get the contract.
ISC - too tied up in RL i think

in my opinion its gonna be Under armour. I personally love their stuff.

Adidas - too focused on ABs, Italy and France And the Lions and Munster and Stade Francais and the Stromers and the NZ super rugby teams. I think the could fit Ireland in if they wanted to.
UA - quite possibly, they want to get into rugby more
Macron - maybe, might be too tied up with edinburgh and their new scotland contract. Depends. Edinburgh and Scotland are their only pro rugby teams, but the make the kits for football teams in the EPL, Serie A and La Liga so I think they'd have the capacity to take on Ireland.
Kukri - don't think they have the facilities
    OB - ^^^
Canterbury - most likely, but for the reason that every other team has CCC, i don't think they'd get the contract. They only have England and SA tier 1 and then USA, Russia and Japan. Hardly every team.
ISC - too tied up in RL i think Possibly but the do make the London Irish kit.

in my opinion its gonna be Under armour. I personally love their stuff.
Have to disagree on a lot of your assumptions there. You also left out Kooga who make the Aus kit.
Personally for me my pick would be Adidas. I don't like the UA Wales or Clermont kits and their leisure range is practically non existant compared to what Adidas provide.

Adidas should be finished on Lions gear now...so 4 year contract for Ireland could be good..like what they are doing with Munster kits and lkleisure wear

Congrats on resurrecting a year old thread to which the answer is already known. IRFU signed a new deal with Canterbury last September, it kicks in at the beginning of next season, i.e for the Autumn tests.

Dissapointed it's not UnderArmour, their off-field range is superb, which is more of what I'd be after anyway.
Hopefully if it is CCC then we don't go down the route of having template #1 in Green like 2007 with Russia, USA, Scotland and Austalia all having the same jersey.

Yeah I love UA gear, but I also like CCC's supporters gear so either way I'm happy.

Some of Canterbury support gear is good, some of it is a bit naf. Adidas are surely making the nicest jerseys at the moment though

I really like this season's CCC jersey. The cuffed arms and shape of the supporters jersey is really nice. The test jerseys are great to play in as well, really strong.

The new SA jersey is really nice, for example.

    any word on the figures?

I know it won't be as big as Puma but between Puma paying off the IRFU and the money from Cantebury I would hope that the IRFU doesn't really lose out.

Puma was 40 million, source on that 20m?

Twitter saying its €20 million over 6 years, €3.3m per year.

Given that the Canterbury deal with the RFU last year was only reported to be worth £5m pa, that's a good bit of business by the IRFU in this climate..

Puma also paid a lot to get out of the contract AFAIK.

Is that more a case of cash plus kit to that value though?

By canterbury 'sponsoring' the Irish team to make their jerseys , does that mean Canterbury pay for & make all the Irish teams jerseys or is it that the IRFU agree to pay Canterbury to make the jerseys for the Irish teams? Slightly confused.. :/

Puma paid €11m to get out of the contract? How early into their deal did they leave?

Glad it is back to CCC. Their gear in the past 2 or 3 seasons has drastically improved, both onfield and supporter gear. I was Manchester airport in one of the sports shops last week and the England rugby gear and leisure wear was excellent. Really nice stuff apart from the rose ;-)

    Absolutely this.

I hope CCC learn from Puma's mistake and actually put out some green tops/fleeces/hoodies rather than navy or something else. Puma did some but far too few.

Yeah definitely, but in saying that, the leisure/training gear was Puma's strong point (apart from the odd pink polo shirt.. what were they thinking? :p ). Every jersey that they put out apart from the first one was terrible.... Current one is just really badly made and looks cheap....

Can someone remind us why Puma pulled out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 225 ✭✭odin_ie

Something about pulling out of supplying rugby kit full stop and focusing on soccer
