Feedback thread: Match Day threads.

After some feedback from some of the posters the mods have discussed a possible way to arrange match day threads during the six nations window after some suggestions from posters.

We purpose the following; a sticky thread with a list of the upcoming games.* People can nominate themselves on the thread to write previews for the match day threads. First post first serve! During the week posters may start general discussion/build up threads for discussing merits of certain games, however these threads will be closed once the match day thread is started.

    *example

    ROUND 2:|DATE|Preview By
    France vs Wales|Sat 9th Feb|Available
    Scotland vs Italy|Sat 9th Feb|Available
    Ireland vs England|Sun 10th Feb|thomond2006

A couple of rules purposed for the following is we'd like the spread the opportunity around, so if multiple people want to cover the same game the poster who hasn't covered any games will be given preference (unless only one person nominates themselves!)

What do you guys think? Discuss.

I think that's a good idea. Hope this is up for discussion, if not then mod away:

I thought it was a bit unfair during the week when someone started a thread to just discuss the game and it just got immediately locked by virtue of not having a huge big preview in it.

Ya good idea. I think the match day thread should only be opened a half hour before kick off too, and then close the build up thread. Obviously this would only apply to big games

I think this would mean the thread would just be on the game. Also, I think the match day threads should be closed a day or two after the game, because the just go horrendously off topic

Well yeah, that's why we're discussing it. The reason that thread was locked was nothing to do with the preview btw, or lack thereof.

I think that leaves it a bit tight for the guys doing the preview, we were thinking of having a time limit of x amount of hours after the last team announcement

I think it's a good idea as those match threads are always a fantastic read, but I'm not sure if it's entirely required to have a formal kind of nomination process, I think it works ok as is at the moment, general discussion then a ligind like Thomond will throw up a preview and it can be merged - and if others want to throw in a preview too, why not?

I definitely think keeping the previews going is a good idea, and if this will help that then great, I'm too lazy these days for many mega posts so don't know if it's fully required, but certainly would have nothing against it.

I suppose if it encourages more previews then all the better. Often they are far superior to anything you'll find from any paid journo in one of the daily rags.

It suits me better to write previews during the week than at the weekend, maybe if I posted the thread and then a mod locked it till matchday or something. That's up to ye.

I enjoy writing them but I don't want to be (nor thought to be by others) blocking people from writing one.

The problem is during the 6n it's very busy here so this makes it very hard to keep track of things. I.e if someone like thomond2006 wants to do a preview the only way he'd be able to ask to do it is by pm'img us. However we've received complaints about this as people aren't sure what the situation is and who's doing what. This is only a temporary solution.

I think the main problem was I posted last week's thread on a tuesday, the Ireland team was only confirmed this week on friday so I had to wait till then.

Yeah, that's why we're suggesting a generic build up thread for during the week, which will be locked after the match day thread is made after the announcements.

:pac: Jayyyyzus, that's a bit cheeky!!

Maybe we should just give the preview writers deadlines to have their work submitted by, and if they miss the deadline just ban them from the forum so they cant let their paying public down again.

On a serious note, we will be giving the preview writers a deadline, but if they don't make it then then we'll just stick up a generic one.

Great idea, but I'd still like the preview a day or two before the game, I find it brilliant for the build up. I thought Friday would never come this week to get the preview, but if there is an open thread to discuss the match that might work for the build up.

It's hard to write a preview with neither team announced. Although normally teams are announced earlier, so this was a bit of an anomaly week.

I think this is a fair enough solution - Thomond's writeups are always of excellent quality but I think it's against the spirit of Boards to simply lock threads that aren't up to the same standard.

At the same time I felt that the thread that was locked earlier this week had a sense of "first!!1" to it - something that I'd hate to see become prevalent in the forum.

Thanks for sorting this out promptly.

I used to do a few preview threads last season but don't have the same time for it since babylegend arrived.

My take on it is that it shouldn't be the preserve of specific poster(s) to do it but it's always useful to have the teams, ref and TV coverage details in the first post.

I don't like seeing lads saying "right, here's the match thread" without even bothering to give their own opinion on it which is what happened this week. But then are we being a bit precious about the whole thing?

What is sometimes useful is if a mod starts the thread and then copies the match preview into the opening post. Any merit on that?

I make so many grammar errors and forget little words that I need to edit it three or four times.

  • One suggestion, ensure that the preview threads are not opened until the Independent is sent for print.

That means that CG, GT et al cannot take credit for yisser words.

I think there could be, seems to be the neatest solution. Gives the writer some space/time while also providing a place for discussion. But then to be precious about it, there's usually already pages and pages of discussion and the impact of "match-day" is lost a little.

Well with 20 ayes and 2 nayes, I'll be posting the Match Day Preview List thread this evening, at about 8pm. Remember, first come, first serve.
