thinking of getting a new 27'' monitor and finding it very difficult to find one that does everything , so which would you say is more important 120Hz or 1440p , primarily for gaming

1440p all the way, the difference between 2560x1440 and 1920x1080 is just enormous.

If you're into super-competitive FPS games, a 120hz monitor might be more suited.

I have a 120hz monitor, I have to say the effect is quite nice in some games, very easy on the eye, especially for FPS games. One note about both though, you will need a monster rig to run modern games on both screens and get the benefit. I'd lean towards the 120hz simply because its not really a big deal of your rig can only pump out 30-60fps for a game.

On the other hand on a 1440p monitor if its struggling you'll have to drop the resolution which may not look all that great

    i7 3770k oc'd to 4.6
    16 gb ram
    GTX690

i have the kit to run it , so its purely down to which monitor is better .

would you notice a big differance going back to a 60 Hz monitor ??

Well, i would personally go for 1440p. there is a difference between 60hz and 120hz, but i would take better resolution over refresh rate. With 1440p most likely it will be IPs panel too, so it will just look plain better then any 120hz monitor.
Keep in mind 27inch monitor 1080p will have bigger pixels and it wont look sharp or good.

Its a nice effect, and I do think it makes it a bit easier on the eye for long sessions. Going back I would notice, but it wouldn't be like going back to a CRT after using a TFT kind of difference. If you have seen 100hz TV's the effect is kind of similar, its less weird though because your not artificially adding frames

Given your specs, if your going for a 27" there is alot of be said for the 1440p, I think you probably notice pixels with 1080p at that size, they are distinguishable on my 23"

I don't really understand this since CRTs are superior in some ways. Most people have not used a good quality CRT so they don't understand.

Definitely 1440p! you won't do any serious competitive play on one because of the input lag but you can still play games perfectly well.

if you're going for 120hz for gaming then 27 inches is far too big. I'd go an absolute maximum of 24" for competitive gaming, which is all the 120hz would really be worth anything for, except for making your mouse look like its moving twice as smooth around the screen, and maybe less eye strain.

Well I mean it in the generic sense rather than those nice 120hz flat screen CRT's people used to use for CAD etc.

I'd go for the 1440p as well. You will need to keep your rig a monster though to make use of it.

To be honest at that screen size I don't even think it's worth it though. 1080p is going to be the standard for the foreseeable future. I'd put off getting 1440p and go for 4k when it becomes cheaper and the standard. You do have a 690 though which is kidna wasted at 1080p so it's probably worth it.

I gotta say I just love the 1440p resolution on my Yamakasi Catleap 27".
The extra screen real estate is just awesome for everyday use but in gaming it really shines.
Also you won't need to enable Anti Aliasing in most games due to the 3.6 million pixels used in 1440p,
which is almost double the 2 million pixels found in 1080p monitors.

Like ShadowHearth says above, I'd definitely choose 1440p over refresh rate every time.

decided to go for a 24'' instead , as frozenfrozen said 27'' is a bit big for gaming , so i went for an Asus VG248QE 24'' with a 144Hz refresh rate and 1 ms response , my current monitor is a 24'' dell ultrasharp 2412M which looks very sharp but hasnt got the speed for fast gaming .
