Can't believe it's 30 years since Shergar was taken from Ballymany. Such a tragedy and loss for racing. From a breeding perspective, it's probably disasterous.

There's an article on Shergar's kidnap on the rte website: http://www.rte.ie/sport/racing/2013/0207/366691-asd/

Yeah, remember it. We used always think of it when we passed the black timber gates of Ballymany Stud on our annual trip to the RDS. It was like a landmark for us on our journey from Clare.

I like to watch this every now and again. Born and raised in the Curragh (dad was a soldier).

Did Shergar not have a very poor record even for the limited numbers he covered

I think we can safely assume that he ended up in a burger. ......... I'll get my coat

    Good idea!

From bits and pieces I've come across, I think he had only 35 progeny, a significant number of which were unraced but still produced some foals. Authaal stands out as the 'best'.

Classic winner and classic placed from 35 is very impressive.

Seems Authaal also ran in Australia with some successes, including victory in the 1988 Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

To think the only thing the special branch could do the main man in the kidnap was to poison his greyhounds.
