Should the Tampa-2 make a comeback?

I was thinking about it today and I'd like to hear some other people's input on this, but would now be a good time for a resurgence in teams playing a Tampa-2 style defense?

My reasoning is that it would be effective against the Pistol which as we all know had a huge year this year. The smaller, faster players would be more able to react to the option portion of that offense and instead of QBs ripping off 20 yards at a time, they'd be contained to short gains. I wonder if this reasoning was a factor in the Cowboys' hiring of Monte Kiffin? Playing RG3 at least twice a year and all...

Or is the danger of multiple TE sets tearing the Tampa-2 linebackers apart in coverage more worrying from a game plan point of view than not being able to contain the Pistol?

the Tampa 2 is still in use a lot. Just like everyting else it will be part of the defensive package jsut like the pistol is only part of an offensive package

The pure Tampa 2 I dont think would work anymore because of the big receivers in the NFL now.

This is an interesting article about its downfall, Rhonde Barber attributes it to an increase in personal fouls against DBs!

Does anyone know of any sites that are good for detailed explanation of formations on both offense and defense?

The Tampa 2 is still in use by a lot of teams but mostly as DP30 said as part of a package. The main problem with installing the Tampa 2 system is that you need to get enough pressure on the QB with your D-linemen so that linebackers and the secondary can drop into coverage

I think though that you're right in saying that the true Tampa 2 system has fallen out of use but the principals behind it are still in use by a lot of teams. When you look at the Bears they use a lot of 2 deep safety coverage with press coverage by the corners and the linebackers covering everything underneath so the system is far from having fallen out of use at this point but it will be very interesting to see if more teams use the concepts to a greater degree this year to counteract the likes of Griffin, Wilson and Newton
