long cage V short cage derailleur

I recently converted from a triple to a compact, the set up is working well so far. One thing I notice is that the long cage rd that I kept can rub off the chain, in that it is almost doubled over when in a low gear. No big deal in that it lets me know when I'm in the wrong gear, due to the noise, but wondering am I doing myself out of a few gears in the process? When it's on the lower front chain ring and in say 7th on the back I'm already cross-chained anyway. Any thoughts?

Just a guess, but it sounds as though your chain may be too long. Sheldon has some words of wisdom as always; http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

Yeah thanks for that smacl, I just fitted the chain straight out of the box, but it looks the right length. Will have a play around with it over the weekend, which hopefully won't mean a trip to the lbs if I mess it up!

Chain out of the box is almost certainly too long, as the same chain is generally meant to fit a larger chainring at the front, and so there would be at least a link or two to remove, but the same chain probably has a few extra links even for that configuration.

Thanks smacl and cython - used the Sheldon Browne link and it's worked out perfect. About 5 or 6 links came off in the end, but all is well again.

Used to just guess myself in the with chains and adjust with trial and error. Some chains were nearly more masterlink than chain with the c*ck ups. Sheldon's technique is idiot proof, especially for the likes of me:pac:

Thought you can only use 1 masterlink per chain?

In theory yes, I've used 2 before with no issues
