hello, i'm an 18 year old northern american girl thinking about going to ireland for school next year, i haven't decided where to go yet i'm debating whether to go to cork or dublin. i'm absolutely fascinated with the culture (and i won't lie, i love the accents) i was just wandering if anyone had advise/opinions on the matter they'd be willing to share with me. i've heard there are some major differences in culture and i don't want to accidently offend anyone so anything you have to offer on the subject would be greatly appreciated. such as:

    1. i don't really drink, so would it be harder for me to make friends because of this?
    2. i heard that irish women don't really like american girls is that true/why?
    3. is there any place that i should avoid/go?
    4. how do irish men go about with flirtation?
    5. what are some slang that i should know?

anything and everything else you'd like to throw in the mix is welcome as well! thanks in advance!:)

    i don't understand?

The after hours forum is not always the best place to ask serious questions. You will get lots of responses making jokes etc - you might not understand some of the Irish humour.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

After Hours will not offer you any real valid advice. It will only bring out all the sleazy men, sniffing around at young American putang who is looking for a chaperone for Ireland. They'll only be interested in showing you their bedrooms and giving you a sample of their 'jumbo breakfast roll'.

Well, that's why I'm here anyway

1: you'll be grand on the drink within a month.

2: Irish women dont like anyone. Not even irish men! Its ok tho, we have polish women. And polish women dont have red hair and freckles and say things like 'scarlett for yur ma for havin ya'.

3: Avoid the northside of dublin and limerick.

4: they spike your drink. Or you'll spike your own drink so you dont have to listen to the bull**** coming from their mouths.

5: Will ya meet/shift me friend?
Usually the friend is nowhere to be seen.

    1. i don't really drink, so would it be harder for me to make friends because of this? It will either be a lonely year or you will end up an alcoholic
    2. i heard that irish women don't really like american girls is that true/why? Yes because American girls are pretty
    3. is there any place that i should avoid/go? Avoid Dublin & Cork mainly
    4. how do irish men go about with flirtation? They will buy you chips (french fries)
    5. what are some slang that i should know? You're only a goul (gowl)

While there is a distinct lack of capitals, and use of the word "like", your grammar, and punctuation, is of a standard that leads me to believe your are not actually an 18 year old northern american girl...

You will get a lot of this in AH. Not all Irish men use sleazy humour like in AH.

i realize that now, but it might help me learn the lingo better or at least get an insight into the "irish humour". so far while reading these responses i haven't been able to swipe this ridiculously goofy grin off my face. well done boys, well done.

that's absolutely insane, and quite frankly i'm offended you think i have to be dumb and over use the word "like" to be a young female.

i do remember whenever i had homework if i didn't get at least a B, my father would yell "ya come from my loins, you're a damn cassidy! how can ya be so dumb?!" :P so maybe i try harder?

    1. i don't really drink, so would it be harder for me to make friends because of this?
    !
unless you're exceptionally social you are going to find irish people impossible to interact with if you don't drink. Imagine it as going to a party full of drunks and staying sober.
    2. i heard that irish women don't really like american girls is that true/why?
    !
Most irish girls don't like foreigners. They see them as an immediate threat. Irish women in general are pasty, overweight and quirky, but in a bad way. You'll find out soon enough.
    3. is there any place that i should avoid/go?
    !
Avoid: outside from 8pm. 9pm in summers.
Avoid pubs if you don't drink. Don't go anywhere where people wear exercise clothes. Except if they are part-taking in some sporting event.
Except GAA where they will probably harrass you for being foreign.
    4. how do irish men go about with flirtation?
    !
    :D

I just hope for your sake you're not black.

    a) racism is rife
    b) it's a sporting society for irish games. Very tribal and conservative.

I knew a canadian girl that was invited to a gaa game, went missing for two years and was found by police working as a cleaner in a nun's convent for no pay. Stay frosty.

i'm sure racism in ireland couldn't possibly be any higher than it is here in america, we just pretend to like everyone but if we thought we could get away with it we'd kill each other. not me personally though, if you're a fun person we'll be best of friends. :D
