Party political people: a scourge that will always hold Ireland back?

Last paragraph contains main point/question if you dont want to read the rant.Is anyone else of the opinion that those involved in party politics really are the lowest form of sewer life in this country? Everyone, and I genuinely mean everyone who I have ever known who is alligned with a political party is in it purely for self interest whether its in the name of making contacts for their career, gaining planning permission/backing for projects or generally just being in the right gang.

Generally these people are completely devoid of new ideas, morals, ideals or integrity. The Fine Gael party for years put out the cry of how they would tackle the bankers, not repay a single red cent to the banks, not engage in corruption, etc, etc. Now as we have all seen they are carrying out IDENTICAL policies to what FF did but are probably doing so even less effectively. The vast majority of those same people who spent years being abhorred by Fianna Fail are applauding and singing from the rooftops at how great a job FG are doing. People with integrity would have jumped ship long ago. Not these boyos though, they've got the power now so they dont give a rats ass.

I'm well aware that this will always happen to an extent but in this country almost no one seems to join a political party with the intent of making the country a better place or an over riding sense of public service.

I guess the main question is why do we have such a low caliber of person involved in politics in this country? Why do our two main parties have no core values that they put above all else? Why do Irish people not have values that they demand their politicians meet?

as they say: anyone who actually wants to go into politics should be banned from it.

They should put an end to career politicians by putting a limit on the amount of terms any politician can serve.

It might encourage some new ideas in the Dail.

Good luck on getting that voted through.

I think it's because the people with real drive and ambition go into other fields: business, the arts, science. The level of debate in Dáil Éireann is embarrassing.

The whip system is abused by all parties. It is necessary in principle, otherwise nothing would get done, but it should be applied far more sparingly. It is a gross abuse of power by the Govt., and it renders TDs and their electors (you & me) powerless.

Sure we need more smart, open minded, self thinkers that will do the best for the country and won't try to push their own views :pac:

Shouldn't that be the case in all countries? Watching politics in Britain it is immediately clear that they are of a far higher standard than they are here. Most politicians here genuinely dont seem to have any clue what is going on around them nor did they ever have any goals beyond getting into the Dail. The tories very clearly have different policies and ideals to the Lib Dems and Labour. In Ireland there is almost no distinction between the parties and the electorate seem happy with that. I cant understand it.

Think about it genuinely think .

    90,000 pa
    Massive pension
    Brand new Audi A5/6
No laws or rules apply to you
    Free hookers
Free cocaine in the house bar

    And you can't get sacked

Why wouldn't you want to be a politician

I've said it before but anyone who was a member of a (mainstream) youth political party should be kept out of politics because they wanted to be in politics too young to have a good reason for it.

Though I have known one or two who followed that route and left once they climbed up the ladder far enough to see the reality of party politics.

I know you are being tongue in cheek but why do Irish people stand for this kind of thing. If you are not going to run yourself at least give your vote to someone deserving of it.
