I recently started studying to sit the CT1 exam in April. I'm not working at the moment so I'm putting good hours into it. I've a Masters in Engineering myself recently graduated, so I'm getting through it ok.

Just wondering if anyone out there has sat it as a non actuary or something and maybe has some tips, links or anything that may be useful. I'd really appreciate it. I'm trying to get into Actuary profession and this is my first step so i dont really have many contacts or anyone i can ask questions too....

I was in a similar position a couple of years ago. It's definitely a good way for a "career changer" to get into the profession; it gives you a hint of what's to come as a student actuary and demonstrates conviction when you are applying for roles.

To be honest, if you have the tuition material it's just like any other exam. You might find an LC/a-level textbook handy to get some of the basics refreshed in your mind but coming from engineering I doubt you'll struggle with it at all. The Institute website is very informative and the acted forums might also be worth browsing. Do all of the past papers back to about '05 (would recommend spending a bit more on the ASET material from acted, which gives a good breakdown of proper answers - the past paper solutions published by the Institute are very sparse). Other than that, you should be grand.

Thanks thats very helpful. Unfortunately all the graduate roles are really up for grabs at the moment so I am under no illusion that to get into this profession its gonna take a lot of work and possibly 2-3 months free work placement!!

I just got the Combined Materials Pack from Acted. It seems very in depth and i'm gettin through it ok. Nothing thats blown my mind just yet, although thats not to say I didnt have to read the odd page two or three times :o

Thanks again for your guidance, I'll look through them Acted forums and see how I get on!
