I'm recovering from injury at the moment and among lots of other options, I'm considering a short course with this organisation. It would be in a field very close to my existing work experience that I've gathered since leaving school. I'm now 31.

I have been in contact with them and they seem eager to have me sign up saying I'm a perfect candidate. My reservations are 1) it's two weeks training with a C&G certificate followed by 16 weeks of placement and "ongoing" training. It seems lopsided 2) it's a lot of commitment when I could be job-hunting. I haven't been looking so far because of my recovery but I work in supply chain which is pretty universal 3) 16 weeks of placement seems like a good opportunity for exploitation by unscrupulous employers. 4) I would have to be sure I want to go with it because the criteria slightly excludes me currently and I have been encouraged to see if strings could be pulled (nothing dodgy- just make the case that I'm disadvantaged because of my injury and I have ample experience to take advantage of the skills and I'm only just excluded currently)...

They say that it's a wonderful opportunity to get back out there and I'll have access to lots of counselling and help after the training.

I wonder if there are there any experiences of this training out there? There's a lot of commitment of time without substancial (finishing around August) and I wonder if my time would be better spent knocking on doors myself...

You havent linked to which course you want to do, but these courses are very employment led, they are in niche areas where there are existing vacancies and funding for the training company is linked to the participants getting jobs at the end, so they have a real vested interested in sourcing a good work placement for you.

There is nothing to stop you job hunting whilst on the course.

When you say you are not strictly eligible, DSP are very strict on the eligibility.

As far as I know Momentum Skills is a new version of what was originally called Begin Again - I did this back in late 2010 / early 2011 & was very happy with it. Some of the training was a little hit & miss but with C&G involved I'd say Momentum training will be a bit more structured. The clincher for me was the work experience...I didn't go with the first placement I was offered as I felt I wouldn't really gain from it and it wasn't right for me, but then I went with a second one. I was offered a job at the end of the placement and am still there two years on. Assuming the placement structure is similar to what I did, you still have plenty time in the evenings and at weekends to keep job hunting, it's not down to exclusively doing one or the other. And, if you do manage to secure employment before the work placement is due to finish I don't think any organisation or employer could be in any way offended if you discontinue your work placement in favour of full time employment. From my experience I find most jobs lately are found through word of mouth or personal recommendations so I think the best way to get something is by getting out there and meeting people in the industry that you're interested in working in. If I had my time over I'd do exactly the same thing again - the result was just what I was looking for, to be back in gainful employment again. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
