Was wondering if anyone can tell me with any certainty if citrus peel, particularly mandarin peel, can be composted? As a family we get through between 2 to 5 mandarins a day.

Absolutely. But it is acidic and if there is too much of it in your compost you could alter the ph of the soil your compost goes into. So just use common sense and try to keep a balance in the compost bin.

Thanks for the speedy response. I'm forever getting abuse for throwing them in the green bin. Are there any everyday alkaline things that can help to balance the PH?

Just chuck in your other fruit and veg scraps and peelings in, along with at least the same amount of browns (loo rolls, torn up newspaper, cardboard etc). Garden waste and prunings too. Grass clippings are great and speed up the composting. Just add stuff in layers of green and brown, but not too thickly.
