Taking a sapphire 6970 (twin fan edition) off a friend of mine for a hundred quid

Is this card worth the money? Will it fare well with this years big releases?

Or should I shell out a bit extra for something a bit more modern?

Not a bad price for it really, but what ever happened to mate rates?

EDIT: Thread title reads 6870 but your post says 6970, my answers applies to a 6870, if its a 6970 its a bargain!!!

    A 6970 for €100 is ridiculously cheap.
A 6870 for €100 is a good price, sells for around €150 new.

6870 isn't the most powerful card, it was always the 'value' card. It will play all the newer games and most of them at high settings but the most power hungry games you will have to turn down a small bit.

The next card up from the 6870 would be a 7850 which goes for around €170.

Like I said not a bad price, but I'll be giving my mate my 6870 for a lot less than 100 euro. maybe I'm too soft!:D

FWIW, I bought a 6870 off adverts last year for €100. Very happy with the deal. Of course, newer cards have come along since.

IMO, it's still not a bad price.

So you get it from someone who is not your friend for €100 7 months ago. And you think €100 is a good price for it today?

I'd say this out be let go for 80-85

If your link is correct it's about 1% better frame rates in games.

Cheers for vindicating some of the misgivings I had tuxy. I might weigh out a bit more for something else then

As others have said here, it's hard to go too far wrong with a 6870 on a tight budget. I've had one since Feb of last year and it's taken just about everything I've thrown at it and it idles nice and cool at 29 degrees C (in my system at least). Nice card. Be sure he throws in any accessories that came with it like power leads or VGA adapter or any cables, should you need them.
