    Website: http://www.forestmarathon.com/

Event has Half Marathon, Marathon, 50km and 100km distances on a 5km loop through Portumna forest. Entry fee is 40e.

    Course Profile from June 2012 - http://connect.garmin.com/activity/189495781

Did the 50km last year and really enjoyed it, very well organized event and great value for money especially if you do the longer distances :)

Not putting my name in yet as not decided on the event, its either 50 or 100km for me though.

Just entered myself for the marathon this morning

As much fun as Connemara was, my original plan to run the 100km has gone out the window as I have not made the improvements I had hoped for, so unless stuff changes I'm putting my name down for the 50km :)

The elevation profile from the linked GC data is quite jaggedy. I've heard the route is nice and favourable but think I remember there being a small hill somewhere? Anyone got any clearer advice about the profile? Is it PB territory?

Small little rise from the marina up to the turnaround point, its only about 100 meters long and wouldnt even be mentioned on any other course in the country. Mind you they do seem to add an extra 50 meters to it on every lap
Serioulsy though if there is a flatter course out there its on a track :)

Sure you seem to like them even more given you want to hang around for 100km!
I would have liked to target a longer distance for this race but it's my last chance for BQ this year so alas it's the marathon for me!

Good luck with it, you won't get a better course for it. It's a great race too, the camaradarie around the course is unreal. I was a bit wary of the looped course last year but I actually loved it in the end.

I haven't entered yet but it's been on my mind since last year. It'll be like a club race for me, theres about about 10 of us doing it so far I think. Probably more across the different distances.

that's a good idea, i was going to enter the half as my long runs aren't long enough for the full but if i could put a few long runs in between now & 15th june, it might mean i could get the qualifying time, it would mean sacrificing a few 10km race though, decisions decisions:confused:

Half tempted to go over for the half; looks like a nice course and I'd like to try one of the longer runs next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭jfh

i'm the same, i would love to do the marathon but the smartest thing is probably to stick with the half, more benefit in doing a quick half than trudging around for a couple of hours in the full.
    next year..

Really not hoping for much when doing the 50km, be lucky if I i even get the same time as last year I'd say....since the Limerick Marathon I've not done longer then a 20mile run. I also seriously trashed my legs on the weekend of the 26th May doing the Cabot Trail Relay, they are still recovering from that!

    :(

16 miles is as far as I've gone since Limerick ..... it'll be grand :D

    From the website:
There are two official refreshment stations on the course at about 2.5k and 5km marks. One at Start and finish and one after the Marina. Please note the refreshment are only available when passing them on your right hand side to avoid crossing the course in front of other athletes.
The official Refreshment/Handling Zones shall be marked clearly by signs “beginning” and “end” and will be approximately 400 m long.
Official refreshment tables will be provided with Water/mineral waters without gas, electrolyte beverages, bananas and other fruits, Cola, glucose/sugar, salt, biscuits etc...
At the end of every refreshment zone sponges will be available.
Tables will also be provided for ultra participants only for personal food and beverages, not for marathon participants.
Competitors can use their own personal drinks and food at all official Refreshments Stations provided.
    • All personal food and beverages must be placed in bags clearly marked with the competitor’s name and race number, and handed to designated race official at the refreshment table at the start line before the race begins.
Allowed support in the Official Refreshment/Handling Zones
    • In the official Refreshment/Handling Zones the handlers and coaches may put the refreshments into the hands of the athletes.
    • During the handover of drinks and food the handlers may accompany the athletes within the Refreshment/Handling Zone, but other competitors in no case may be obstructed.
    • Team management can support athletes for any shoe and dress change.
    • Any medical support is permitted e.g. treatment of smaller injuries, blisters, by massages etc.
    • Transmission of information of any kind is also permitted.
Note: All this support is allowed only within the Official Refreshment/Handling Zones - not in the Drinking/Sponging Stations.

You're only a lighweight if you don't try... The "little" half is demanding emough, and if you put a lot into it, you'll take a lot out of it..

I'm sorry, the impression I got from your post was fairly negative.. I may be wrong...

See you at the start line friend :)

yes you are wrong, it was said in jest, believe me i know exactly how demanding a half is, got run down after pushing myself hard in limerick half.

i would love to have a go at one of the longer distances but i "fear" the unknown. admire those that throw themselves into it. & portumna is geared towards the longer distance. next year hopefully.
best of luck in the half

Had planned for popping the 50k cherry here this year but without the quality work done I'm not happy about just 'ticking the box'.

Going for a PB over half instead having gone 1:39 (Kinvara) / 1:37 (Limerick) I'm running for 1:34:58 in Portumna.

See you all on Saturday. Best of luck to everyone starting ahead of me!

Just signed up for the 1/2M event .
Decided after the Cork City Marathon that I'd run several 1/2M's leading up to Octobers Dublin City Marathon and the legs really need something to get them moving again to be honest.
Will also be crewing for another boardsie who's running the 100km and am really looking forward to the whole day out !
Here's hoping for a great day's running for all of us!!:)
