VAG 6 speed boxes

I just got a 6 speed Audi A6 and never having one of these before I have a few questions.
I've heard the 6 speed box can be a week point, anything can be done to pre-long the life?
Should 6 gear only be used cruising at a steady 60mph+ or does it put more strain if your going from 55-65 constantly in 6th?

Any other advice regarding this would be helpful.

I'm sure they're not a huge weak point and mines only at 75k, but wondering would a gearbox oil change at the next service be a good preventive measure.
There is no gearbox oil change schedule, only level checks.

6-speed DSG box in a 06 Passat with 234,000km - no issues at all.

Serviced on time at a a dealer though. Works out about twice per year

Wifes 06 Passat has 225k Kms on the clock and has had no bother with the box (6 speed 2.0TDI)

If your worried about the gearbox just change the gearbox oil that will help prolong the life of the gearbox. I recently got the oil changed in my gearbox as my astra 6 speed is known to give trouble. There is 155k km on mine and the gearbox is perfect. So if I was you I would change the gearbox oil.

The Audi multitronic gear box is renowned for big problems, the various forums are awash with stories.

Yes but the thread relates to 6 speed manual

Just going to get the oil changed anyway, no harm and piece of mind more than need.

Yes but multitronic incorporates six speed manual selection:

    From the wiki:
    Multitronic also offers a number of driver-selectable fixed ratios, selectable from either the gear-lever in a sequential style, or via (optional) steering wheel-mounted fingertip paddle-shift controls. [2] Early versions offered six ratios;

Multitronics from 08 onwards give very little trouble, they are pretty much sorted, I've not heard much issues. And the multitronic is a fantastic box, I really loved it.

The DSG on the other hand, beware. They had to force VAg in the U.S and China to offer 10 year 100,00 mile warranty.

Fair enough but its clear the OP is referring to the manual box not a 6 speed auto with sequential gear selection. The box you refer to is a known dog though.

Dsg box is rock solid if serviced right. They have been using it in cars for 11 years at this stage.

Some have been very lucky but there have been mass failures so much so that VAG were forced by court order to offer 100,00 mile 10 year warranty on the DSG in China and the U.S, maybe other places too, but the E.U always has pathetic warranties and they have not recalled either the Multitronicor DSG, it's a disgrace same with Flywheels, but that's for another thread.
