Is it the rig from this thread in 2011? (cyber stalking FTW :p), because if so you could get a reasonable upgrade for a good bit less that that.

So on the presumption that you bought something very similar to what IrishMetalhead suggested way back then.....

At the very least the PSU is still absolutely fine for your needs, and you could keep the 4GB ram and just add another 4GB of the same. Getting the 965 Phenom II also means you could get a few more years out of the motherboard (I don't think a X6 is worth it).

I' don't think there is much point getting a new motherboard just for an i3 as it isn't a whole lot between that and the 965BE, and to get an i5 build would push up the price by between €150-€200 or so depending on the exact CPU and board you get.

Also if you have Windows 7 already, I don't think there should be any pressing need to upgrade to Windows 8 TBH.

I think the following you give you existing rig a nice new lease of life.

    Item|Price
    4GB-Kit Corsair DDR3 PC1600 C9 Classic|€26.04
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Box, Sockel AM3|€84.81
    Sapphire HD 7870 GHz Edition, 2GB GDDR5 PCI-Express, lite Retail|€212.09
    Crucial M4 128GB SSD 6,4cm (2,5")|€100.79
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€442.72
