Can't find a link as I just heard it on the news.

A 22 year old was arrested after attempting to rob a house belonging to a man in his 50's in the Glencar area of Donegal.

The homeowner defended himself with a golf club & managed to detain the burglar until Gardai arrived. The burglar was brought to hospital & arrested upon his discharge.

Fair play to the homeowner & afaik this is the first case that has come to public attention of a would be thief getting a hiding after entering someones property since the new laws were introduced.

We should all join Golf clubs to learn how to defend ourselves...

The home owner deserves a commendation. Fcuking scumbags think they can get away with anything. Pity he didn't maim the bastard.

Just got a pick axe handle yesterday. Beside the bed now, just added a wrist strap.
Have to say for €8 its a mighty handy thing, I'd say it would dish out justice very well.

Ditto. As your scum rarely travel alone he could have been set upon himself.

Yep fair play I reckon. You cross someone's threshold with intent you deserve what you get IMH. No doubt the media bed wetters will be out in force to condemn the owner, and across the divide the rabid calling for birching of the scum. My worry is how this stuff could escalate and how innocent people might end up injured or dead.

Lots of isolated homes, close to the border so some can hop across making it harder to catch them. A lot of the border counties have this problem, but it's a rising problem for all of rural Ireland.

As someone who was broken into 4 days before Christmas this year.. I love to see these vermin get what's coming to them.

I just hope the homeowner doesn't face any repercussions from the scummer's chronies now.

Because there's no longer any point in calling the police, I hear they have to come up from Dublin on the bus these days to attend a call, and only during the hours of 9-5 due to the overtime ban....

Usual stuff from the paper as well, the scumbag was on bail following vicious attack in the town previously. Whats the betting he is out on bail again after this

Was half expecting the details to say it was the homeowner that got arrested.

That's how much faith I now have in our justice system.

Fair way play to the homeowner.

That poor guy he beat up. He was just trying to make a living as he was obviously on hard times, no need to batter him with a golf club.

Oh wait, he broke into his property to steal and violate the owner's living space? Dirty scummer deserved it :pac:

OK well I'm from Glencar so please don't refer to it as 'scummy'. And while it has a few bad estates, it isn't the dodgiest place in Letterkenny. I lived in a quiet wee estate where there was never any bother, and we lived right beside what would be considered a 'scummy' area.

On topic, golfing isn't really popular in the area (the golf course is on the other side of town basically) so I'd say this burglar picked the wrong man to fúck with. Fair play to the man for sorting out the burglar

Most golfers don't live next door to a golfcourse, being on the other side of town isn't exactly a huge distance to navigate. Probably 4 drives of a 3 wood to a scums head distance to travel I'd say!

Haughey, was already on bail after being charged with assault on December 10th last.

Inspector Kevin Gately told the court he had breached his previous bail conditions

However solicitor Patsy Gallagher said his client had not been proven to have broken his bail conditions.

Inspector Gately said the fact that this case was before the court was evidence that Haughey was not being of good behaviour.

    Unbelievable.

The guy was on bail for assault, and then charged with 2 break ins in january 23rd and feb 4th.

If someone breaks into my house and falls downs the stairs, then gets up and falls down the stairs again, are the gardai able to tell how many times the intruder fell down the stairs?

Should have got a hatchet or a claw hammer.A pick handle can be hard to use in the confined space of a home.
A hatchet is a lot shorter thus easier to wield if the time comes(for chopping logs upstairs obviously!)

Anybody know what the home owners(or anyone who finds themselves in this situation)legal standpoint is?

Asking because was only talking about this very thing with someone the other day and was told "No matter what happens, make sure you drag the criminal OUTSIDE of your property after the ahem "Lesson" and leave them well away from your house and then deny everything"

I would have thought it would have been the opposite scenario, if the criminal was still inside your property when the guards arrived it proves he was trespassing??

What are the conditions of bail that was set, if breaking the law is not breaking the conditions?

No complete rubbish. Glencar is a very respectable area. It's scum bags like Jason Haughey who got clobbered with the golf club that aren't even from letterkenny that brings the name if the area down.

Jason Haughey has been named as the scumbag in this case.

Wait for the thread where Jason haughey is plaintiff in a civil case, for his broken leg or wounded pride.

What a sick world. Too bad he was able to walk into the courtroom

Not in a biggish town like Letterkenny you don't. Btw Glencar has its 'iffy' parts but on the whole most of the people who live there are grand:)

No you drag them upstairs or near to the closest bedroom downstairs if there is one. Immediate threat=whatever use of force you feel like.
