Quick opinion lads, which the better buy: a jeep cherokee 99 with 77000 miles or 2.8 pajero jap import with 125000. No history to speak of with either. Thanks all.

Personally I would pick the pajero, only if it was auto though.

Don't think jeep has many fans here, parts could be expensive too. Pajero is more of a known entity and you're more likely to get local advice and cheap parts from Milners.

Better buy for what? Towing? Off-roading? Daily driver?

And what engine is in the Jeep?

Think the Jeep has the 2.5 VM Motori engine? Lots of power but loves head-cracking ! Then again lots of the Paj's like cracking heads too. I had a loan of a 2005 Jeep Cherokee with the 2.8 TD for a few weeks, jesus the power was crazy, up around 167bhp I think, always felt like it was just ready to blow mind you. The Pajero is the safe bet for parts at least anyway...

is it Jeep Cherokee or Grand Cherokee

the Grand Cherokee is 3.1TD and its 140 HP with auto transmission
The 99 Cherokee is the 2.5TD and not as powerful

Parts can be bought at reasonable price especially if bought on line and much cheaper than most of the Japanese

My view is 2.5 diesels aren't powerful enough in

VM 2.5 Italian design engine in Jeep. 300Nm @2000. Weak point is overheating I'm told. Also have been told they leak! Rain gets in via poor welding. But less than 80k on clock compared to 125k on Paj 2.8. Have no driving experience of either. Paj shoves out 292Nm @2000 so little difference towing-wise I'd say. Tend to lean toward Paj if only as Sean says for reasonable parts from Milners.

the only issue with VM2.5 is over heating usually because the radiator or water pump fails, I have the VM3.1 and radiator failure is common at over 10 years of age if you keep driving it when it over heats the alloy head will warp as the engine block is cast iron, this is common with all engines but for some reason it seems to be the only thing non jeep owners all jump on. I've the grand Cherokee and rain and poor welding isn't a issue, I've not heard anyone on from the jeep community say this about the Cherokee but then I do spend my time only on the Grand Cherokee Jeep forum.

What I will say is if your building a trail rig the Cherokee is cheaper to modify and make a great off roader.

2.8 with so little power for its size usually translate into better reliability
