Anyone any idea if they will run middle distance masters races separately next week? There seems to be a lot of interest in experiencing the new track, can't imagine that they can have too many people in each race.

Alternatively, I wonder if they will put carogories on the back of each singlet as well?

Last year they ran mixed races but no indication on singlet - I got the starter to separate the groups on the line so we knew who was who but it can be hard to remember in the heat of the race. This year there is likely to be bigger fields so hopefully will be separate races but they will probably only decide on the day.

    I assume you are in so - 1500 or 3000 ?

There was a fairly big field for the men's Leinster Indoors 3000m in Athlone on Saturday. They ran the juniors and seniors as one race, then when the masters all lined out for their race the field was still too big so two masters races were run, the first involving the M35, M40 and M45 groups.

Anyone see the results of either the Leinster Indoors or the CC in Derry? Can't find them anywhere.

    Anyone else going ?

I imagine that they will try to stick pretty much to schedule, although if they get big numbers for the middle distance events (which I think they will do with the new track and all) it could throw a spanner in the works

Have to say very dissappointed with the organization today. While I loved the facilty itself, the small things that mean so much were a mess.

First of all we arrived to find that they didn't have our club entries there, even though the secretary had received a confirmation email confirming the entries.

No clock? I could have sworn I saw clocks at the finish and halfway on youtube last week. You would think that wouldn't be a major problem as it is a championship race.

But then the real fun started. For some reason they mixed up all the participants in the 3000m, not sure what kind of criteria they were using, if any. But it ended up with having some poor soul who must have been close to 60 in the first race with guys who were running sub 9, which meant he was lapped 4 or 5 times.
Then the winner of the 2nd race, who was V1 (O/35) more or less did a time trial as there was nobody near him.

You would think that its not rocket science to figure this out, I know there are guys from different categories who would be around the 9min mark, and it would have been great to see them go head to head. But is that not what the graded meets are designed for?

Btw, I'm not complaining because I ran shi*e

    Speedy44,

I hear what you are saying and you are right.
Entries regularly get lost in AAI (especially for Masters events) - mine was missing for Tullamore this year and I saw lots of manual entries yesterday despite a "no entries on the day" policy. I guess most of them were mistakes being corrected.
Yes, they should have a clock (or 2) for every event in Athlone - don't know why it was missing. I suspect it fell through the administrative cracks too. I believe the trackside clock will make an appearance for the junior/u23 event today.
And the mens 3000m was a complete shambles. They completely got the heats wrong, what were they thinking? It will probably take them all week to figure out the results.

On the other hand I think the glass was more than half full. We were in a world-class facility in Ireland with a lot of the things we have never had before - a fast track, spectator seating, proper changing & warm-up area (inside and out), heat (too hot?), comfort etc.
All the other heats were properly divided out - for the 800m we had single age-groups in most races, I think the 1500m were the same. All the other results were promptly posted (although the electronic timing added a few tenths to my time. :(
Also the quality of the fields was like nothing seen at a masters event in Ireland before. Was it 3 olympians - Paul McKee, James Nolan, Pauline Curley (who was beaten twice) ? There were other age-group records and outstanding performances all over the place, including 2-3 under 9 mins in that 3K, not least your team-mate.

Overall I think it was a good day for (masters) athletics in Ireland.
It probably helps that I am happy with my own run too ;)

agree about the glass been half full. It just bugs the hell out of me that they can get the big things right (like building the place) and screw up on the smaller items (which make a hell of a lot of difference to the athletes).
I was a great atmosphere up there too, especially in the stands watching everything unfold. Here's hoping they are only teething problems and they will learn from their mistakes.
Congrats agaiin on a great run, sets you up nicely for the outdoors. Anything planned between now & then?

I think the Athlone venue would never have been built if it was left in the hands of AAI. It's interesting how the same man is now responsible for both.

AAI is composed of hard-working, well-meaning volunteers (and a few others !). Turning that into an efficient, "professional" organisation that we can be proud of (as we are of Athlone) with reduced external funding is a massive challenge - any volunteers ?

Fixing everything that's wrong in Athletics Ireland may be a bigger job than building a 10 million euro facility.

I know that guy who got lapped 4 or 5 times and in fairness to him he tried everything from the shot putt to the 800, 1500, 3000. he might look 60 but is only 41, he got lapped after 500 mtrs in the 3k and my heart went out to Peter O'Sullivan who won heat 2 but should have been in heat 1 where all his competition were in. As a result because heat 1 had a stronger field it meant peter missed out on the opportunity of the gold as he basically had to time trial. Maybe in future predicted times could sort this out and in turn have the proper athletes in the proper heats.

I heard during heat 2 of the 3000m that Peter O'Sullivan was a late entry, and this was some sort of punishment.

The guys that got placed in the 1st heat were saying that they would have loved if Peter was able to race against them.

I came 5th in the M40 800m. I was coming 3rd and two guys past me out with over a 100 metres to go. My legs went in the last 40 metres.

I tried to pass out the guy coming 2nd with a lap to go as I felt he was slowing down. He kept me at bay and I couldn't pick it up again.

The 3000 was definitely a mess and no clock was poor. Otherwise it was great and far better than other years. Medal ceremonies were really quick (apart from the mixed up 3k) and what a venue - I want to go back every week.
Don't forget the officials are all volunteers. On balance, they do a great job and are owed a big thank you.
Of course my day was biased by a gold and silver in two really enjoyable races (m50 800 and 1500).
Track running's the pinnacle of athletics in my opinion.

I certainly hope this wasn't the case, that they would not be so petty.
Also, I know Peter, he ran there the previous week, and I doubt very much if he was a late entry.

    My apologies.

It was not a case that athletes had late entries, but AAI didn't have a record of some of them. I think this was the mix up.

As heard through the grapevine :pac:

only the 1,2,3 in races and no mens 1500 (the one I want). At €15 a race, results within 5 days is a reasonable request.
