Anyone got any info on what's caused the closure of 10/28, it was notamed at 1007 as closed at 1004 until 1500, given the current wind, its making for "interesting" approaches on to 16:D.

Had to pick up a couple of family members off a flight from STN at lunchtime, watching the the offset on short final brought back memories from years ago, but I'd not want to be having to do it again today with the present winds, 20 or so Kts of a cross wind never was much fun in a light twin, even the bigger aircraft were carrying a lot of offset today.

Lot of other people were watching at the 16 threshold, in the right conditions, its a good place to be watching action, not too noisy with the present wind, and you get to see who knows how to handle a cross wind, and who doesn't. The Emirates arrival was impressive, rock solid all the way down the approach, with the winds that were blowing at the time, that was good to see.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

I know lots of people have been saying that runway 28/10 is in tatters at the moment, but exactly how bad is it?

I know lots of people have been saying that runway 28/10 is in tatters at the moment, but exactly how bad is it?

If the present forecast over in the met forum is any way close to correct, it's in a lot better state right now than it will be in a couple of weeks time!

Given how recently that runway was built, its worrying that the condition has got so bad so quickly, there's not that many heavy aircraft using it compared to the number at somewhere like Heathrow etc.

At what stage does the long term requirement to build 28R become a panic to get 28R built in order to keep the place operating with any degree of certainty? That's before we look at exactly how DAA are going to finance 28R, which is looking more than a little problematic for the next 10 years at least.

Whatever about 737's, 320's 330's and 777's etc operating in 20 Kt and higher crosswinds, ATR's and the like are not as forgiving, the weather to come this week will likely cause all manner of problems if the freeze happens as well, any loose concrete on the surface is likely to end up very loose by the time its been snowed on, frozen, cleared with whatever they are using these days, and then scraped, ploughed or whatever. Some of the temperatures that are being forecast for the next week or so could create more than a few extra holes to fill.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Hmmm, some of the DAA people must be "looking into it", now NOTAM'ed at 1512 as closed till 1700. Did they lose an aircraft in it at the same time?

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

That explains why they were blasting off over my head in Dublin 5 all day: the climbout for 34 is right over my house. Didn't have any big heavies, but there were a couple of 757's, Continental/US Airways I would presume.

Apperently it's like creme brûlée. Hard surface topping with a very soft centre. It's well known that the runway is long overdue a complete mid layer resurface.

Given how recently that runway was built,

It's more than 20 years old*. Is that "recent" in terms of runways?

    * I'm not 100% sure how old it is, but I was driven out onto it before it opened as part of a school tour some time between 1987 and 1989.

Probably not considered as too recent design-life wise. Runway concrete/ashpalt takes a good hammering with impact loads as opposed to less damaging live loads.

Just did some searching, at this site, they seem to be suggesting that the life of a concrete runway is between 25 and 30 years, looks to me like DAA have some issues coming down the line, the cost of rebuilding it is not going to be cheap! The potential disruption of closing 10/28 for a prolonged period of time is significant.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Time to build the northerly parallel. Heavies won't get off 16/34 in the summer or in low pressure weather/wet.

I believe DL had to offload cargo and 10 PAX from DL91 yesterday in order to get the flight out owing to the closure of 10/28.

It's a while since I was out plane watching at DA with my radio receiver. But I do remember in the past that sometimes the control tower would offer R16/34 to a pilot/FO but it was not accepted, F/O would ask for the longer R28 and would often mention that they were a heavy plane. Often thought it was strange although I know pilot is ultimately in charge of the plane.
Btw, during the shutdown of 28/10, that option seems not to have been there.

Correct. You would expect a crew to choose the optimum available runway and when 16/34 is in use (and 10/28 is available) the longer-range flights often seek 10 or 28 as the wind may dictate.
