Just looking to see how much damage I have done, we ran out of oil sometime today, maybe even lastnight, however the light on the control switch stayed on and i could still hear water pumping around.

I got oil, just enough to cover the pipe and tryed the heating again and had no joy, pressed the big red button (technical term) to fire it up and it kicked in with the usual start up routine but then, after about 5 or 6 seconds it stopped again and a load of white smoke came from just behind the red button, its a firebird 90, not to sure how old it is, it was here when we bought the house 5 years ago and we have had nothing but problems with the whole heating system.

Is it time for a new boiler or should a service do

    Cheers

You need to get someone to look at it.Check out www.oftec.org and search for a tech in your area you could also post what area you are in as there are enough good oil boiler techs here and someone might be near you

You have just ran out of oil & air locked the oil pump, no biggie.

What burner is on the Firebird, is a Riello G3, G5 or an RDB. There will be a data plate on the burner.
If you can't find it, does the red plastic cover only cover half the burner with curved edges or is a complete red square box?

On the front left hand side facing you, you will see two nuts. The top one has a slotted screw in it (do not touch this one). The bottom one is a 15mm nut. Using a 15mm spanner, open the nut. Wait a few minutes and see if kerosene comes through. If so, bleed some, tighten up nut & press the reset button.
If no oil, whilst semi-open, press the rest pump to allow the pump to pull the oil through. You might have repeat a couple of times but not too many.

Shane is correct in how to bleed the pump but depending on the tank position and pipe run you may need more oil inorder to bleed the pipework and pump

Yes very true. I did not take note of the low level of oil. More than likely more oil needed.
