I know there are loads of threads on this but I thought starting a new one.
I got paid for the first time today and I was taxed at 20% which I think is right .But, for the 2 week pay period I got €64.00 tax credits and I don't think thats enough.
Is there anything I have to do to fix it or does it come right after a while?

Your weekly tax credit should be around €64 , - check if your payslip has the letter E or letter N as your tax status .

    It has E on it.

Ask your employer for their registered number and ring your local tax office to receive a cumulatice tax credit cert .

as this is your first payday in 2013 , you will have accumulated a few weeks of tax credits , and so you should receive a refund of some tax you paid through your payslip , when your employer processes your new normal tax credit cert

Would I also be eligible to get a refund of USC? Pretty sure that was also overpaid as according to deloittes tax calculator I should have €388 weekly and I got €685 for 2 weeks

It will all balance out once you get you tax credit in order. Just be aware the longer you leave it, the worse it gets. For instance, after the 4th week your credits will go down to nil, if nothing is done.

Would HR be able to sort it or do I need to contact the tax office myself?

I sent the Form 12A to the Revenue office in Waterford. Should I have sent it to the regional office in Rosslare?

Did you ring them? The Form 12A can take weeks to be processed. If you ring them, they can give you your tax credits over the phone issue and new tax credits via ROS to your employers straight away.

I rang them today and they didnt sort it stright away over the phone but I think I managed to jump the queue a bit.
Is it wishful thinking to hope for it to be sorted by my next payday Friday week?

What did you say to them? You mentioned you're in Waterford, did you ring the East/South East PAYE Helpline? 1890 444 425. There is a long automated process but eventually you should be asked if you're calling to register new employment. Select that option and then give them your employer's registered number, and your start date. If you do all that then yes, you will have your credits in time for your next pay day.

Edit: I'm just after realising this may be your first job. If that's the case then the Form 12A is necessary. It's difficult to say whether you'll have it in time for your next pay day, they can be quite slow at processing paper forms.

That seems to be the problem alright. I know that after the 4th week you get zero credits and are taxed at 41% so I hope its sorted by then if not next week.

No, you don't get taxed at the higher rate until week 9.

Emergency tax is actually handled very fairly for the employee. For the first 4 weeks you get the single-person's tax credits, (€63.46 per week) and the single person's standard-rate cut off (€630.77 - you can earn up to this amount before being taxed at 41%). So depending on your personal circumstances, the pay you received for the first 4 weeks may have been correct and you may not be due any tax back (or you even may have underpaid tax, but this is unlikely).

For weeks 5-8, you still get the standard-rate cut off, so you'll still be taxed at 20% up to €630. You just won't get your tax credit, so say you're still on emergency tax until week 7, once you get your tax credits, provided you're on the normal single person's credits, you will be due €126.92 tax back (€63.46*2 weeks).

It's only from week 9 onwards that you have NIL standard-rate cut off, and NIL tax credits, and I'm sure you'll be sorted out by then :)

Sorry I should have said I am only in week 3 of the job. The last payslip I got was for weeks 1 and 2 and next friday will be paid for weeks 3 and 4.
Last week I was given €64 credits but I believe I should have received €127. Also I paid USC at 7% on everything I earned which was not correct

Oh well if you're paid fortnightly then yes, you should have received 2 weeks worth of tax credits. You should talk to whoever does the payroll about this.

The USC is correct, emergency USC is 7% on all earnings.

Got.my next payslip today and I'm not on emergency tax anymore which is the good thing. I don't really understand the calculation because its all done cumulatively and not per pay period. It says I have €507 tax credit which I can't figure out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,893 ✭✭✭allthedoyles

Tax is calculated cumulatively and per period , so your payslip should read figures showing your pay period tax credit , and your year to date tax credit .

Both figures should match when calculated to your total number of weeks in employment .

I'm 5 weeks on emergency tax now. I rang the tax office to give them my employers reg number in week one. They sent me out the form.

Can anyone tell me how in God's name I get off it? Do I need to ring the tax office again or do I need to ring payroll where I work.

A copy of this should have been sent to your employer as well. If you are still on emergency tax, you need to talk to someone in the payroll section about it.

    Ok, thank you very much.

As this is about emergency tax I have a quick question. I was late getting in my P45 to my current company (past the 8 week mark!), obviously by then my emergency tax had gone wwaaayy up. Will I be getting this back? Also, after I handed in my P-45, I am now on tax code W, so my tax deductions are nearly 50euro of a 352euro pay-cheque. Will this be returned to me next week? Please help so confused!!!

Hi. You are on a week one basis. Basically your lower rate cut off and tax credits for the year are divided by 52 to give you your weekly allowances. If you do not use your credit for that week, your employer can not take them forward against future tax, nor set them against past PAYE deducted (I.e. would result in refund to you). The revenue put you on week one while they sort out your previous earnings etc (p45 delay caused this). Once it is sorted your employer will be notified and you will be taken off week one (triggering tax refund if relevant). If not sorted next week and you know your employer has sent on your p35 it would do no harm to ring revenue (have PPS number and employer registration number available). If worst came to worst and stayed on week 1 for rest of year, you would submit your p60 at end of year to revenue and they would repay tax overpaid.
