New Card Payments?

I went through McDonalds Drive-Thru the other day. Had no cash, so gave my card and the guy took the card and handed it back after a few seconds. I wasn't asked to enter my pin and I didn't even see him swiping the card. The payment definitely went through, as it's on my online banking. Is there a new contactless way of paying? I thought this technology was to be aimed at smart phones. I used my visa debit.

Visa debit have a new contactless payment for sales of under 15 quid. All you do is hold the card in front of the terminal for a second or two and it's complete.

Contactless payment, some places will have it, and it can be used for sales under €15.00

You should see this symbol on your card.

Those Usain Bolt Visa contactless ads were never off the TV last year in the run up to the Olympics. How did you not see them OP?

I don't watch the ads. If I want to watch a movie, or even if I want to watch the news on TV, I pause the upc box, do something useful, return to watch what I want and skip the ads. 10-30 minutes of ads is not my idea of a good time.

Hmm... a new way for pickpockets to rob from your cards in a crowded Luas/bus ?

This is a whole new thing for old people to be terrified of, people still use cheques ffs, like the one in tesco the other night paying for 50 odd quids worth of stuff with a glorified IOU.

They're not meant to do the contactless payments for you though — if they take the card off you, they should be asking you to put in your PIN.

If it happens, make sure you at least get the receipt & double-check it.

I suppose it's because it was a drive-thru that he took the card. The equipment might be fixed, or have limited movement and my car is quite low down, I usually have to hand the card up to them :)

Ok ill be the first to ask then- if your visa debit currently doesnt have the symbol to allow you to carry out contact -less transactions for 15euros and under, can you send it off for an upgrade or do you need a new card altogether? Who do you contact in such case, your bank?

It's contact-less. The bank should contact you.

I was one of the first to get the visa debit card, as my business laser had just expired when they started issuing the new cards. It has the symbol, so i'm just assuming that they all do, considering they're only new.

:) we nearly got a full page without an AH answer.

If it's contact-less, he won't be contacted at all.

Got mine ages ago, my Laser expired around the time BoI were bringing them in. It's been driving me daft trying to find somewhere to use the bloody thing.

Did one in an off-licence in the UK, the guy behind the counter was as excited as me, it was the first he'd had as well.

Security-wise, I'm guessing you'll need to be a registered merchant to get the right kit with all the right codes. Or am I being terribly naive?

You'll need a new card. Banks are slowly but surely rolling it out, after just switching from laser to visa debit.
