Looking for a job - any job

    Hi everybody!

I'm looking for a job in Ireland. I'm in Portugal but the economical situation here is terrible, so I really want to get out of here ASAP, preferably to Ireland.

I'm looking for jobs on jobs.ie and other job boards, but it seems that I'm just unlucky... I've received a few calls, but so far no dice...
I think that the main problem, and the reason why I didn't get a job yet, is because I'm not in Ireland, but on the other hand I don't have the means to go to Ireland without getting a job first.

I'm a native Portuguese speaker and my speciality is IT, namely: Systems Administration, Networks Administration, QA and Software Testing, Computer Assembly and Repairs, 1st and 2nd line Support, etc.

But, although I would prefer to continue working in IT, I can to do other things while the ideal job doesn't come, so, I'm willing to work in bars/pubs, groceries, etc. I think the only think that I'd never consider doing is door to door sales ('cos I hate when they come to my door, so I wouldn't want to be on the other side).

If anyone knows of any job they can send my way, I'd appreciate it.

    Thx

Ireland is in a recession with massive unemployment also but if you have two languages or more, tech support in a multinational is usually a good start as a lot of Irish people are not fluent in several languages.

Loads of call centre jobs with languages. Loads of employers looking for IT people with language skills. Where in Ireland are you looking to go? Dublin, Cork or Galway would be the obvious call as a lot of the multi-nationals would be based in and around those areas.

For a kick-off, there's Microsoft, and Oracle in Dublin. Apple, Trend Micro, EMC, McAfee in Cork. Dell (the remnants of) in Limerick.

Failing that, there's always London if you can't find anything here.

I'd do a bit more research.

The IT jobs market in Ireland is quite good at the moment for those with experience and particularly a second language. I'd second what those above me have already said, and look for something in tech support. If I can share one bit of experience with you from my own search recently, it would be not to get discouraged if you don't hear anything back. Recruiters aren't great at replying to you, but a lot of the companies mentioned already won't deal with recruiters so keep an eye on their careers pages and apply directly - you'll have to be a bit persistent but you should be fine.

HI, what systems do you have Sys Admin experience with. What type of networking? Do you have any qualifications?

Hi again, and thanks for the quick replies.

ssaye I know that Ireland is not in great shape right now, but although unemployment rate is almost at 15%, is still lower than the unemployment rate here in Portugal, and the salary over here is much lower (the minimum wage is 3 times smaller), and the government is cutting it down even more and raising all kinds of taxes.
As I said, Ireland is not in great shape, but I'll give it 2 years, maybe 3, to be back in full strength.

ABajaninCork and tbh thx for the advice. I've been focusing my search on job boards because of the quantity of jobs posted every day, but I'll give those companies a try.

Hi vin33 my experience in administration and networks is in Windows server and Linux, but mostly Windows.
I've over 6 years of IT experience including but not limited to IT Support, Network Administration, Systems Administration, Computer Repairs.
I'm very comfortable with Active directory, IIS, Exchange Server, ISA, Server Virtualization technologies like VMware, Scripting (either to create small automation or full testing scripts to interact with other apps),etc.

I've a Electronics and Telecoms Lvl 3 Course and a Installation and Maintenance of Networks and IT Systems Lvl 4 Course.

Tbh, Id say aiming for Tech Support would be aiming a bit low with those skills. You are right though it is harder to get a job from outside the country. What if they call you for an interview?

Is there anyway you could come over and aim to spend a few weeks. Its handy having an irish address, and it means going for an interview can be done quickly. Maybe set up a few interviews before you arrive?

Is your CV on Monster? I've gotten most of the jobs ive had on that.
