Just repaired an oil leak on my car and had a friend run me into town last night to get oil, out of three garages in town one didn't sell any and the second only sold the one litre bottles ( I needed the four or five), got to the third garage and they plenty of four litre bottles of Q8 10-40, perfect, grabbed a bottle and nearly fell on the floor when charged 38 EURO !!!!!!.... I had to get it as I had no option but that price seemed way over the top, sure I was only expecting to pay about 28 max. Is Q8 now a leading brand or something as I was under the impression it was always a reasonably priced oil, just checked halfrauds online and its 37.50 for Castrol Magnitex. Just wondering what kinda money you guys would pay/expect to pay for Q8. Cheers guys.

Petrol stations will charge a lot more for oil. They really have you by the danglies as they know people will only buy when they can't get anywhere else.

Smaller outfit will sell it for more. If you're buying 4 litres in a service station you're obviously in some form of a bind so they price accordingly.

That did cross my mind alright, and yes I was definitely stuck as could only get a lift in the evening when most places like motor factors are shut, that kinda mark up though is insane

    Well.

Still cheaper than running it without oil to the nearest 'cheap' oil seller, isn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,662 ✭✭✭walus

Sorry to hear that. The reality is that no one should be paying more that 20 quid for this much of low quality oil 10w-40. For the money you paid plus a fiver more you will get top full synthetic Millers delivered to your door. I stopped paying over the top and get my oils online these days, they come out cheaper and are much better product that Castrol etc bought in regular stores.

Do they? Never paid any notice to the price, just assumed it would be more reasonable than a petrol station.

That is how Tesco make their money. People assume they are the cheapest on all products, whereas very often that is not the case at all.

I personally do not use Castrol at all. First after the Bay of Mexico oil spillage by BP who owns Castrol and ramped up the prices after they were made liable for it. But mostly because there are much better oils out there at better prices.

I remember when Tesco were about the cheapest place around for petrol, Tesco in Killarney are now one of the, if not is the most expensive.

Well, it is a different spec oil 15w-40, which is usually the cheapest of the bunch as it is basically a mineral oil. It has virtually no application to any passenger cars cars these days. 5w-30 is the viscosity that is recommended nowadays to most cars.

I was wondering about the 5-30 as didn't know much about it. My trusty little 8v punto definitely takes 10-40 though

Out of interest what site are you ordering from?
Tried getting Millers the last time I was changing the oil but delivery from the UK made it too expensive.

love castrol myself. i use nothing else.

had silcoline in the gsxr 600 on the dyno it made 98.7hp

6 months later only diff to the bike being castrol instead. 109.98hp

petrol stations are going to be dearer and on top of that 1l bottle are going to be dearer that a gallon bottle.

im not suprised at that price

That's since they brought out the 10c off petrol when you spend x amount on groceries.

I found since the spill much better deals on it, I've stocked up on loads of 4 litres for €20 in Halfords not too long ago.

Yeah, the shipping from UK kills the deal. Contact Peter from http://millersoilsireland.ie/ and he will send you the stock/price list. They have good rang of XL longlife oils that are of top, top quality.

I generally buy Mobil ESP 5-30 for around 55e( so thats 11 e a liter or half the amount above in the pic) whenever its on special in halfords, I think its normally 65 or something. Not cheap but its approved on modern VAG diesels and on my Audi TT 225, one of the few oils that is.

For everything else I would happily use Lidls 5w-40(porsche and bmw as well as VAG approved to certain specs) which they have occasionally and again Id stock up on around 15 or 20 liters. My attic must have 2 or 300 quid of oil in it, I also always keep spare oil and air/pollen filters. My family generally doesnt chop and change cars once they are happy with their lot so everything is used at some point:)

Despite the usual bashing ill get I'll reply and justify the perfectly acceptable price that the station is charging.

10w 40 average brand oil selling for €9 a litte bottle is perfectly reasonable.

The station is making about 30-35% margin on that which is hardly a rip off

Also the reason you had to go to a station was because the motor factors was closed at 6pm, your garage is open at 6am till 10pm or later every day of the week and has well over double or even triple the wage costs and running costs of the motor factors

I'd put money on it that the motor factors are making more profit a litre than the garage after everything has been take in account

There's more to the price of something than the price tag

I assumed the 1st post was about 1 litre of oil (yep, read it too fast)

OP the local shop used to charge €19 for a litre of shell helix and ultra was an extra €5. Those 1l bottles you got are reasonable value
